  2. “Account for the continuing success of certain genres of film” 45marks • GENRE is a French term meaning TYPE or KIND • In Media Studies we often ask the question “what GENRE does this film belong to?” or in other words, “what TYPE of film is this?” Genre is both a description and a form of classification. To place a film within a genre, we must be able to describe the individual film, and we must be able to explain the principals on it which can meaningfully associated with other films of that GENRE.

  3. “Account for the continuing success of certain genres of film” 45marks” • GENRE study is a formal way of examining the system of conventions whereby GENRE establish patterns of repetition; but this goes further because GENRES ARE NOT CLOSED- THEY ARE PARTLY OPEN SYSTEMS which need to stay the same in order to survive, BUT GENRES also need to retain the possibility of change and innovation. • GENRES are then COMPLEX SITES of CULTURAL REPETITION and CULTURAL DIFFERENCE. To understand GENRE you must understand patterns of fixity and patterns of change.

GENRE membership possesses a communal identity , giving the audience the chance to readily that prodcut • People like to know what type of film they are going to see- they find a GENRE film more accessible than a one-off masterpiece.

  5. THERAPEUTIC VALUE or INDOCTINATION? Genres very clearly work in terms of film production and marketing. Audiences find familiar genres very appealing. Genres then work through social concerns, producing new experiences for the audience and providing the audience with new knowledge. BUT it could be argued that genres simply reproduce existing social relations and if so they are ‘formulae’- no more than rigid and unchanging stereotypes.
