JaidaMaraeFairman, Toronto, Liver recipient, November 2008 • Born in September 26, 2007 • Only 11 weeks old, she was diagnosed with BiliaryAtresia, which eventually led to progressive cirrhosis of the liver. • She was put on the waiting list for new liver and when she turned 13 months old she recieved her lung transplant. Introduction • What Is Organ Donation? Its the donation of biological tissue or an organ of the human body, from a living or dead person to a live recipient in need of a transplantation
Last Year, 1803 transplants were performed • Unfortunately 195 Canadians died while waiting for an organ transplant • It is necessassary because the recipients organ has failed or has been damaged by disease or injury.
Myths Regarding Organ Donations • Religion does not allow or agree with organ donation.
If doctors see my signed donor card they won't work as hard to save my life
Sociologically Perspective CANADA: • According to Canadian Transplant Society, a 90% majority of Canadians support organ and tissue donation. • In most provinces its the next of kin who will give the approval, whether you intend to be a donor or not. • In Ontario, all cost of surgery for living or after death donation is covered by OHIP. All cost is covered, only if the donor is in Ontario.
It is illegal to buy or sell organs in Canada. • Selling organs are illegal in all countries except Iran. This helps reduce the waiting list although it is a great disadvantage to the poor as they wont have an organ waiting for them and they can be manipulated.
Organs that can be transplanted are : Liver, small bowel, kidney, pancreas, heart and lung • Also muscle, bone, nerve and skin as a functional unit can be transplanted. • In 2013, 1504 Ontarians were waiting to receive organ transplants and tissue transplants. In 2013, approximately 95 Ontario residents died while waiting for organs.
Concerns of families around organ donation would be religion and the body of the dead donor • Religion has a big role in the end of life experience and how rituals are important at death • Religious group support organ donation except for Romas and people who follow Confucianism • Gives family members satisfaction and happiness that the donor was able to save countless other lives.
Family Members upon grief might change minds about having consent on donating organs • The body is also a concern. The organ/ tissue is carefully removed from the body. The surgeons are careful to not damage the body
Organ DONation Should Be Mandatory • Organs would be wasted if it is not used when the person died. • Creates a system of “recycling” organs when it is needed by someone else. • Organs are not needed once that person passed away. • One person Giving the organs to a person who needs it more. • is able to save 8 other people with their organ.
A person who donates their organs goes through a rigorous procedure that makes sure that their organs are capable and healthy. • Reduced waiting list for people who are waiting for a transplant. • Medical staff takes great precaution to see if the organ is taken care of • Thousands of people die waiting for an organ transplant because of lack of donations
Gives other people a second change in life. • Improve the quality of life for example, a blind person who has never seen before would benefit from receiving a pair of eyes from an organ donor. • Ability to comfort another’s family because you’ll be saving another family’s love and it would make the donor’s family feel a little bit better knowing that their loss may be able to save another’s life.
Hospitals are short on tissues and organs and they are in need. • Not ethical to sell one’s body parts • A lot of religions smiles upon the generous donation of the organ.
The donor does not get to choose who gets the organ, and they may be of conflicting backgrounds or beliefs • An organ donor's death equals a possible 8 lives saved, and doctors may not try their best to save that one life • Whole body donation requires your body to be in a lab for possibly weeks after death
Your body automatically becomes property of the government • Living donation would require hospitalization, time away from work, pain during recovery, and medications for the donor • Living donation allows a large opportunity for risk of infection for the donor • Living donation with only one lung or kidney could result in severe risks and complications such as severe diabetes or short gut syndrome
Certain costs apply to the donor such as transportation, lost time of work, post-operative physical exams etc. • Most or all of these above costs would not be covered by insurance • Possible failure with transplant after death could cause the donor's family to grief even more • Fear of possible sale on the black market
A person enters the black market to stop and “shop” for blood, bones and body parts • 1700 in past 25 years report loved ones bodies being stolen • Profit about $6 million dollars on stolen body parts • Just takes one crooked employee from a funeral home to make it happen
