The University and its NSS context • Established in 1913 as an industry-funded college • A post 1992 institution (former Polytechnic) • 5 very large HE faculties, 1 FE faculty • 1 wholly owned subsidiary HE institution (The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama) • Total Number of Students: 25,000+

  3. The University and its NSS context • Circa 84% of 25,000+ are undergraduate • Number of students in NSS sample this year: 3,511 • 4 large campuses: 2 in Cardiff, 2 in Pontypridd • 14 separate Welsh colleges’ students included in our NSS sample (902 bodies)

  5. Enhancement: top down andbottom Up! • Student Reps networks • Subject leaders • Faculties • Quality Committees • Collaborative Committee (FE Partners) • Academic Board • Board of Governors

  6. Why NSS action plans? • NOT just NSS – triangulation • The most reliable measure? • Externally facing • Shared with the student body • Easily benchmarked • Its relevance to recruitment • Love them or hate them – League Tables!

  7. Timescales for action planning • Full results (inc <23) out in September • Deadline for action plans: 1st Week November • Quality Enhancement Committee: 2nd week November • Deadline for reporting through Strategic planning process: Mid January • Feeding back to students: throughout

  8. What’s covered in the action plans? • Good practice • Specific comment on below benchmark subjects • Lead contact name • Timescales and milestones • Anticipated changes • How effectiveness will be measured • How students will be involved + updated • Plans for collaborative FE partners

  9. Resources for action planning • Faculty access to NSS results database • Subject Librarians • IT Customer Support Centre • Data pack – comprehensive stats • CELT: Centre for Excellence in Learning & Teaching (pedagogical issues) • Executive and Governor support

  10. Promoting good practice • Excellence in Learning & teaching awards (including student nominations) • Innovation grants • Peer scrutiny of results • CELT: pedagogic staff development programme • Teaching observation scheme

  11. So…Have we got it right? • Yes! In that the students’ experience is firmly at the centre! • NSS Participation rates were 54% now 70% • 2010 results????????????
