Urgent Call for Carbon-Free Electricity Generation by 2030

Tim Yeo, Conservative MP and Chair of the Commons Committee on Energy and Climate Change, emphasizes the urgent need for the UK to transition to carbon-free electricity generation by 2030. This target is crucial to avoid costly cuts in other sectors and boost confidence in energy investments, further advancing the green economy that significantly contributed to UK growth in 2011. The Energy Bill currently lacks a clear decarbonization target, risking continued reliance on fossil fuels and increased energy costs. We must act now to embrace future technologies and not be left behind.

  1. It’s time for MPs to walk the walk on climate change. "…the choice facing Britain is clear. We can embrace the technology of the future, … or we can cling to the combustion-based technologies of the past [and] gamble the future on assumptions… Britain must look forward, or risk getting left behind." Tim Yeo, Conservative MP, Chair of the Commons Committee on Energy and Climate Change Kirklees

  2. Dear _________________________ MP, The Energy Bill going through Parliament should include a clear target to make sure electricity generation is carbon free by 2030. Such a target will avoid more expensive cuts being required from other sectors to achieve our carbon targets. It will also give energy companies the confidence to invest and innovate and further develop the green economy that accounted for 1/3 of UK growth in 2011. I join Tim Yeo, Chair of the Commons Committee on Energy and Climate Change, in condemning the government's failure to include a clear target to decarbonise energy generation by 2030. In a speech on 18th December 2012,Tim Yeo clearly set out the stark choice facing our country: "As chairman of the Commons Energy Committee, I think the choice facing Britain is clear. We can embrace the technology of the future, set a target to reduce our present heavy dependence on fossil fuels and upgrade our electricity system. Or we can cling to the combustion-based technologies of the past, gamble the future on assumptions about the availability of abundant cheap gas and slow down the process of decarbonising our economy. Britain must look forward, or risk getting left behind." I urge you to work with Tim Yeo and other MPs to amend the legislation to include a clear target to make sure electricity generation is carbon free by 2030.Anything less will lock us into future dependence on fossil fuels and rising energy bills.
