  1. The Work of the Holy Spirit

  2. Questions about the Holy Spirit’s Work Isn’t it true that the Holy Spirit works in a mysterious way that we can never understand? Doesn’t the Holy Spirit work today through miracles, wonders, and signs just like He did in the 1st century? If not, how does the Holy Spirit work today? How does the Holy Spirit dwell in us today?

  3. The Holy Spirit Works through Communication The Father planned for the salvation of man, the Son executed it, and the Holy Spirit communicated it to mankind. The Old and New Testament was communicated by the Holy Spirit to holy men. (2 Peter 1:19-21; Hebrews 1:1-2) Jesus promised that He would send the Holy Spirit who would guide the apostles into all the truth (John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13).

  4. The Holy Spirit Works through Communication The apostles used the words that were given by the Holy Spirit. (1 Cor. 2:9-13; Acts 2:4, 14) When we read the words of the Holy Spirit, we can understand what has been communicated. (Ephesians 3:3-5) We can understand the work of the Holy Spirit contrary to the opinions of many today.

  5. The Holy Spirit Works through Confirmation The miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit were given by the Lord to confirm that the apostles were teaching the truth. (Mark 16:20; Heb. 2:3-4) They were only passed on only through the laying on of the apostles hands. (Acts 8:18; 19:6; 1 Cor. 12:1) The spiritual gifts ceased when Divine Revelation was completed. (1 Cor. 13:8-10; Romans 12:2; James 1:25)

  6. The Holy Spirit Works through Confirmation When we quote the Bible, we are quoting the words of the Holy Spirit. (1 Cor. 12:3; Hebrews 3:7; 1 Peter 4:11) The Holy Spirit does not work through miracles, wonders, and signs today since God’s word has already been confirmed, but God does answer prayer through Christ. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

  7. The Holy Spirit Works to Convict People of Sin "And He (the Holy Spirit), when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.” (John 16:8-11) Most preaching today is done to convince people that they are saved rather than convicting them that they are sinners.

  8. The Holy Spirit Works to Convict People of Sin Many don’t want to hear preaching that makes them feel bad (John 3:19-20). We must allow the sword of the Spirit (Eph.6:17) to pierce our thoughts and intentions since we cannot hide them from God (Heb. 4:12-13) Jesus reproves those whom he loves (Rev. 3:19). The preacher must preach the word which hurts sometimes (2 Tim. 4:2; Acts 2:37) but faithful Christians must also convict people of sin. (Ephesians 5:11, 13)

  9. The Holy Spirit Works to Convert the Lost “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5) A begetting is necessary for both physical & spiritual birth. Even though the woman is giving birth, the baby is of both man & woman. In the same way, spiritual birth is of both water and the Spirit.

  10. The Holy Spirit Works to Convert the Lost When we obey the teachings of the Spirit, (which includes being baptized in water), our sins will be washed away. (Titus 3:5; Eph. 5:26; Acts 2:37-38, 41; 8:35ff; 22:16; 1 Pet. 1:22-23) “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16) When people obey the gospel today, the Holy Spirit worked to convict them of sin and convert them to Jesus Christ.

  11. The Holy Spirit Works to Consecrate the Saved We have been sanctified by the Holy Spirit to live a holy life. (1 Cor. 6:9-11; 1 Thess. 4:3-8) By the Holy Spirit, we are able to put to death the deeds of the body (Romans 8:5-14). We can know that we are consecrating ourselves by the fruit of the Spirit that is being produced in our lives instead of the works of the flesh. (Galatians 5:19-23) The Holy Spirit dwells in those who obey Him. (Rom. 8:9f; 1 Co. 3:16-17; Acts 5:32)

  12. The Holy Spirit Works to Consecrate the Saved The Father and Son also dwell in faithful Christians (Eph. 3:16-17; 2 Cor. 6:16). Being “filled with the Spirit”and with “the words of Christ” are synonymous. (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) God has sealed & given us the Spirit as a pledge of our inheritance. (Eph. 1:13; 2 Cor. 1:22) There is no mystical “better felt than told” dwelling of the Spirit taught in the Scriptures.

  13. Conclusion Yes, we can understand the work of the Holy Spirit. He communicated His will to the apostles which we can read & understand. The miraculous gifts confirmed the word spoken by the apostles. The Holy Spirit convicts men of sin by the sword of the Spirit (God’s word).

  14. Conclusion The Holy Spirit converts man when they are baptized into Christ. The Holy Spirit consecrates Christians to live a holy life. If you have been convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit, be converted or restored to Christ today!
