  1. Vietnamese Push - Pull Factors By Dominic Parisi

  2. Poverty • One of the stronger pushing forces was that of poverty many Vietnamese had nothing when they left for America, only the hope of a new life • Upon returning to Vietnam some second generation immigrants were shocked & horrified that they came from such a poverty stricken place

  3. Vietnamese woman rationing food

  4. The War • By far the primary reason people immigrated over the United States was the Vietnam War. Their homes and lives were destroyed and we offered them a way to survive and rebuild as well as an escape from Communism

  5. Fear • The war destroyed many families way of life along with their life style. What used to be an agricultural culture began to change leaving many without jobs or money • Vietnamese civilians were afraid to go outside their homes for fear of being shot or injured. In some ways they were hit hardest by the war

  6. Hope • The Vietnamese were starved of hope during the war and the thought of a new world and a chance to start over was to good to be true “...When you are a refugee, hope is the last thing you dare let go." -Dr. Kenneth Wilson

  7. o e e d m F r • Freedom was one of the biggest pulling factors for the Vietnamese people. It is what inspired us to win our independence from England and Inspired them to stow away on boats with nothing but the dream

  8. Opportunity • America offered more opportunity than many Vietnamese had their entire lives, with the outbreak of the war opportunity was eclipsed by survival but was still one of the major pull factors attributing to the mass migration

  9. Opportunity (con’t) • As the 1980’s were coming to a close the Vietnamese were still leaving. As one commentary puts it: “In may cases, the desire for a better life, rather than a fear of persecution, had become a primary • motivation in the decision to leave Viet Nam.” • As is normally to case with immigration to America what a land of opportunity it is

  10. Conclusion • The Vietnamese as a people went through a very dark time during the war and many did not survive. They were both pushed and pulled to come to America. Push was the basic instincts of survival while pulling as no other country can was the vast opportunity of America we are truly blessed to live in this land of the free
