  4. What are some functions that cells perform in living things? • Cells get oxygen • Get rid of wastes • Obtain food • Grow

  5. Robert Hooke • One of the 1st people to observe cells • Observed cork cells under the microscope • Reminded him of the “cells” monks used in monasteries • The word cell means “small room”

  6. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek • Another scientist observing tiny objects under microscopes • He observed lake water, scrapings from his teeth and gums, water from rain gutters, and tiny, moving organisms that he named animalcules
