  10. Manifest Destiny – The belief of the U.S. government and its’ citizens that the nation’s destiny or fate to expand westward from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

  23. Northwest Ordinance Requirements To become a state: • 5,000 men requirement who owned at least 50 acres • Had to have 60,000 people • Have an established self-government

Physical Characteristics that influenced population distribution • Pacific Ocean – allowed Asians to immigrate to California during the Gold Rush • Gold – Population increased as settlers looked for gold • Rocky Mountains – barrier between East and West. Led to Gadsden Purchase that enabled a railroad to be built.

  35. Causes of the U.S. – Mexican War • President Polk wanted to expand the United States • Border dispute between Texas and Mexico • Texas claimed southern border was the Rio Grande • Mexico said NO IT’S NOT!

Effects & Impact- Mexican War • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) • Ends the war with Mexico • Grants the U.S. the Mexican territory of New Mexico, Arizona, & California • Gadsden Purchase -U.S. paid Mexico $10 million • Acquired land necessary for a southern transcontinental railroad • Attempt to resolve conflicts with Mexico over the annexation of Texas
