What is Merit Pay? Part of employees salary related to good performance. Teachers case: Results of testing directly affects their pay. Based on students and teachers performances and standardized testing.
Arguments Against Merit Pay • Many factors play a part in students performance, not only teachers. • It creates competition and no collaboration b/w the teachers will take place. • The teachers will spend most of their time teaching only subjects pertaining to the test.
Cons for Merit Pay • Teacher do not get paid enough as it is • Favoritism and Bias • Inevitably encourage dishonesty and corruption
Poverty • Affects: -nutrition -test scores -All areas of development -emotions -healthcare -motivation -school, family, & overall life
Standardized Testing • Biased and favor a certain group. • Scores based on the test lead to children being labeled. • Does not accurately measure the child’s abilities. • Puts stress on teachers as well as students. “Creative work is incredibly difficult, and that is where the tests lie.” -Jeanette Winterson
