  1. Telematic Tree The Story of Adam and Eve Christine Szapiel

  2. Telematic Tree Proposal Throughout my time at Ryerson, New Media studies have focused on how the public interacts with experiences of media. The installation will be a single use interaction as participants ensure a tree is kept alive through a game-like setting in Processing; participants can take turns ensuring enough sunlight and water is transferred to the tree. In turn, I plan to create a small physical tree which will react to a user’s interaction. I envision these reactions to be the branches drooping when no interaction is made, and rising branches as it grows. Through these interactions, music instilling a sense of accomplishment in the user will play when watered, as well as sounds conveying a lonely emotion, like crying, when the tree is ignored. The project idea is derived from Ken Goldberg’s Telegarden, in which online users are able to plant into a real garden (controlled by robotic devices) through actions on the internet. Telegardenis a virtual community where if users are unable to care for their area of the garden, they can ask another member to intervene for the time being. In today’s society, it is essential that we are able to help one another in reaching goals to develop deeper connections within communities. Thus, the virtual tree will compliment the story of Adam and Eve, and the story of humanity coming together. Although my project will not be centered online, a sense of teamwork and care will be instilled as the tree requires a number of people to grow strong. During the creation of Telematic Tree, Processing will be the leading component as it will promote user interaction through mouse functions. In using programming, I will be able to create a project similar to that of Telegarden which I am using as a guide throughout this project. Although, instead of basing this project online, I will create a physical project which students will be able to interact with in a classroom setting. The basis behind the Telematic Tree is to present to the public how we can come together and build stronger ties and relationships within our society as it was initially created to be. My main goal is to show my classmates that society can work together to complete a task, and in turn, develop a greater sense of respect for one another.
