  4. What is Career and Technical Education? Career and Technical Education is cutting edge, rigorous and relevant curriculums that prepares youth for a wide range of high- wage, high-skill, and high-demand careers. CTE serves as the bridge between the academic and working worlds.

CTE FACTS • Career and Technical Education encompasses 94% of high school students and 13 million postsecondary students • Integrates with academics in rigorous and relevant curriculums. • 81% of dropouts say relevant, real-world learning opportunities would have kept them in school • The average graduation rate for CTE concentrators is 90.18%, compared to a national graduation rate of 74.9% • Roughly 70% of CTE concentrators pursued postsecondary education after high school

What are Career Academies • Career Academies are generally a three or four year curricular model developed around a career theme or career clusters. • Consists of a small learning community, comprised of groups of students within the larger high school who take classes together for at least two years and are taught by a team of teachers from different disciplines. • Video Clips\Career Academies Transform a High School Presentation Clip.flv

Benefits of the Academy Model • Studies have found that students in career academies perform better in high school and are more likely to continue into post secondary education, compared to similar students in the same schools. • Other proven benefits include: • Increase in school attendance rates • Increase in graduation rates • Increased in overall student GPA’s • Workforce development and Labor Market outcomes

Career Academies:Where are we now? • Discussion of adopting this model began in spring of 2010 with a visit to Wando High School in South Carolina. • Wando High is wall-to-wall academies. • Our district leadership met with students, teachers and administrators from the school and were extremely impressed with what they saw. • Summer of 2012 we were awarded a $45,000 grant from the Dept. of Education in conjunction with RCU to design and implement a career academy. • 1 of 3 districts statewide to receive this grant. • Health Science Academy

Career Academies:Where are we now? • Implementation of the Health Science Academy will begin in the 2013/2014 school year with a cohort of 9th grade students. • Students will be able to apply for admission and will then go through an interview process as well as having to meet other requirements. • Academy students will be immersed in the health field throughout their high school experience with many opportunities to connect their studies to individual interests and the real world.

Career Academies:Where are we going? • Academies on the horizon: • Engineering Academy • Teacher Academy • Academy of Digital and Information Technology • Implementation of a mentoring program with community and business leaders • Construction of a new state of the art Career Complex building with a future bond issue.

The Future of Career Academies at CHS • Future CHS Academies include: • Academy of Engineering • Teacher Academy • Academy of Business and Marketing • We are developing our academies based off the Ten National Standards of Practice as defined by the National Career Academy Coalition • We are in the process of forming new partnerships and strengthening existing ones in an effort to create model academies for the State of MS.
