  2. What is a phrase? • A phrase is a small group of words standing together without a subject or a verb • Here are some examples: • leaving behind the dog • smashing into a fence • before the first test • after the devastation • broken into thousands of pieces • because of her glittering smile

Are there different types of phrases? • YES! • Some of the different types are: • Noun phrases- which includes a noun, and the modifiers which distinguish it • Ex. a light brown jacket • Adjective phrases- modify nouns (can be attributive-appearing before the noun or predicative- appearing after the linking verb) • Ex. sitting over there • Verb phrases- The part of a sentence containing the verb and any direct or indirect object, but not the subject • Ex. might be having • Prepositional phrases-modifies the phrase which consists of a preposition and its object • Ex. in the garage • ‘in’ is the preposition! 

  4. What is a clause? • A clause is a collection of words that has a subject and a verb. • Here are some examples: • I despise individuals of low character • hairless Chihuahuas are uglier than rabid raccoons. • because she smiled at him

  6. Who wants candy? Instructions: • Come to the board and write down a sentence using a phrase or clause. • Underline and then label! • Now, here’s the tricky part– your sentence must correspond to the sentence before yours! • We’re going to make a story! Try not to make it too strange… • If you write a sentence you’ll get candy!
