The definition of advertising: • Advertising is the non-personal communication of information usually paid for and usually persuasive in nature about products, services or ideas by identified sponsors through the various media. • Media are the means of the dissemination of advertising, including newspaper, magazine, broadcast, TV program, billboard and mail. The newspaper, magazine, broadcast and TV are called the four main media of advertising. Moreover, any kind of objects or tools can be a medium for the advertisement, such as airplane, train, bus, building, neon light, movie, package, exhibition, and etc.

  5. The merits and demerits of advertising: • With the growing influence of mass media, advertising invades every aspect of our lives. Whenever we turn on the TV, look through a newspaper, open the mailbox, or surf on the Internet, advertisements would immediately jump into our sight. As they make things so attractive, we often end up buying things that we do not really need. Advertising not only adds to the price of the goods, thus harming the consumer's interest, but also imposes a kind of materialistic value upon the audience.

  6. More information about advertising: But that is only part of the story-advertisements are informative as well as persuasive. They provide us with up-to-date information about the latest products. Some advertisements are so elegantly presented that we are inspired or even moved. No matter it is an evil or an angel, advertisement has become an indispensable part of our modern life.

  7. Advertise, advertiser, advertisement & advertising(I) advertise: advertise (vi & vt) (在报纸、广播、电视上)为(产品等)做广告E.g. We should advertise for someone to look after our children .  我们应登广告找一个照看孩子的人。 advertise in newspapers / magazine 在报纸或杂志上做广告E.g. She advertised for her lost son in the evening paper .  他在晚报上登广告寻找丢失的儿子。advertise on / radio / TV 在广播电台或电视上做广告 E.g. 1) This company heavily advertise its product on radio and television . 这家公司在电台和电视上大作广告。2) Only very established ,well-known clothing companies can successfully advertise through radio . 只有很稳固、知名度很高的服饰公司能成功地通过广播电台做广告。

Advertise, advertiser, advertisement &advertising (II) advertiser: • The advertiser is the sender of information and all the advertising activities should be consistent with the purpose and willingness of the advertiser. Therefore, the advertiser is the main body of advertising, namely, every advertisement should have its specific owner of the advertising information. The specific owner should be a recognizable group, including corporation, enterprise, government, organization and individual.

  11. Classification of Advertisements (I)Consumer Advertising: Most television, radio, newspaper and magazine ads are consumer advertisements. They are sponsored by the manufacturer of the product or the dealer who sells the product. They are usually directed at the ultimate consumer of the product or at the person who will buy the product for someone else’s use. It uses the widest range of forms and devices, whose main task is to attract readers and urge them to buy the product .

Classification of Advertisements (II)Business Advertising: • Business advertising is often said to be invisible, because unless you are actively involved in some business, you are unlikely to see it. The majority of advertising you see as a consumer appears in mass consumer media. Business advertising, on the other hand, tends to be concentrated in specialized business publications or a professional journal, in direct-mail pieces mailed to business establishments, or in trade shows held for specific areas of business. Until recently, business advertising was rarely seen in the mass media.It needn’t put much effort in attracting its readers, its words are more practical.

Classification of Advertisements (III)Service Advertising: Service advertising is actually part of consumer advertising and business advertising, since consumer goods and industrial goods both include relevant service. However, due to its intangible feature, service is advertised in a more imaginable way. Hence wording service advertising is somewhat different from product advertising. Service advertising appears in both mass consumer media and specialized business publication according to its different target audience—consumer or people in business.It describes more about its product in some imaginable way.

Classification of Advertisements (IV)Public Interest Advertising: The general objective of public interest advertising is to inform, persuade, or remind people about the particular idea, cause, or philosophy being advertised. This kind of advertising is often used by non-business institutions, such as schools, hospitals and charitable organizations. We also see advertising by associations. In addition, we witness millions of dollars worth of advertising placed by government organizations. Much government advertising announces the availability of such valuable government services as consumer assistance, welfare aid, or career guidance. It is a nonprofit action, which however still needs to attract readers’ attention, tries to strike the reader in emotional way and urges them to take action immediately.

  15. Four functions of a successful advertisement: (1) Attention—a good advertisement should attract the consumer to direct their attention to the product of it.(2) Interest—the introduction and publicity of an advertisement should arouse consumers’ great interest.(3) Desire—the publicity of advertising should stimulate consumers’ desire to buy the product, and make them realize that this product is just what they want.(4) Action—the advertising makes consumer to response to the advertising information and evoke them to take the action of purchasing.

Practice makes perfect (I)sharpen your mouth • In the following conversation, Tanya Nichols, the owner of an ice cream manufacturing company, is talking with her marketing manager, Carla Hutchison, about the advertising campaign for the company’s new ice-cream sandwich. Discuss with your partner and try to make up a dialogue using the above information. (Next page is a sample.)
