Congress Takes Control • How were states to be readmitted under the Reconstruction Act? • They had to write a new state constitution supporting the 14th Amendment • They had to give African American men the right to vote • What was President Johnson’s argument against the Reconstruction Acts? • He said that African Americans did not deserve the same treatment as white people • Why was President Johnson impeached? • He fired a member of his Secretary of War without Senate approval, which was the law then • What was the result of the impeachment trial? • He was not guilty, and he kept his job • Who won the election of 1868? • Ulysses S. Grant • Despite the fact that southern states agreed to allow African Americans to vote, what happened? • Southerners used violence against them to stop them from voting
