    5. Battle (siege) of Vicksburg Grant is able to seize the city by constant artillery strikes and strangling the city Vicksburg is extremely important because the Union gains control of the Mississippi River thus splitting the Confederacy

Sherman and Grants Plan of Total War The Confederacy knew they could not win but hoped for an armistice after northern morale fell sick of war Sherman and Grant did not allow for this to happen Grant knew that he could lose more men than Lee and still win. He went on a constant offensive. Sherman wanted to destroy the morale of the Confederacy. He burned everything in his path from Chattanooga to Atlanta and then on to the sea

    8. The Effects of the War Approximately 360,000 Union soldiers and 260,000 Confederate soldiers died. Dramatic increase in the power and authority of the Federal Government Income tax and Conscription laws were passed Economically the Southern states were decimated as the Northern states boomed Technology changes war Minie ball, grenade, land mines, and Ironclad ships

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
