  1. I201 Organisational Systems Interactive Systems

  2. Content • Virtual Worlds • Simulators • Bump Top • Voice Recognition • Ubiquitous Computing • Touch Screens • Microchipping • Cellphone tracking

  3. Learning Outcomes • Describe communication advantages and disadvantages of virtual worlds • Identify and describe three different simulations and explain why they are used • Explain the potential benefits of voice recognition system to end users • Define ubiquitous computing • Describe business possibilities of touch screen wireless technology • Explain the ethical debate surrounding microchipping • Describe the differences between microchipping and cell phone tracking

  4. Interactive Systems • Interactive Systems: • Ambiguous term I chose to describe two basic groups of systems: • Systems that aim to replicate the real world inside a computer • Systems that aim to bring computing power out into the real world (ubiquitous computing)

  5. Replicating the real world Interactive systems

  6. Virtual Worlds • Second Life • Business in Second Life • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWE1FTgp1G0 • Educational Uses • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOFU9oUF2HA • Breaks down some communication barriers • Almost physical presence • Creates some new ones and old ones • Learning curve, navigation, single conversations • Potentially the next step in online meetings

  7. Simulators • Potentially useful for training/professional development • Flight Simulators • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytp_QuGXE8E • Medical Simulators • Beating Heart • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gru0x3zdrQU • Mannequins • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCpkaS_0NsY • Fire Simulators • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPxDqFejcSs • IBM Innov8 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXplJ6ZNEs0 • Good in situations where practical experience can be dangerous, too expensive, or impractical

  8. Bump Top • Attempts to make your computer desktop look and feel more like an actual desktop • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqcmPJ-oVL0 • Free download from • http://bumptop.com/(free version has limited functionality) • Has been acquired by Google… (watch this space)

  9. Voice Recognition • Voice recognition systems • Useful for situations where standard interaction methods are infeasible • E.g. while driving a car, using hands free • Useful for users who are unable to use standard interaction method • E.g. Various disabilities: blind, amputees, quadriplegic, etc • Can also just be used for some cool stuff • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP8BvawX8cU&NR

  10. Enhancing the real world Bringing computing power into the real world

  11. Ubiquitous Computing • Using computer technology to enhance the real world is often referred to as ubiquitous computing • MichioKaku – Ubiquitous Computing • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HHEQuspi4o • Long Version • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlbuh3_ZKsE • Potential health monitoring clothing • Facial recognition sunglasses • Poor future predictions • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9eAiy0IGBI

  12. Touch Screen • Microsoft surface • Potential useful as: • An interactive coffee table that can interface with wireless devices (multimedia sharing, transfer) • Payment interface at cafes etc wireless interface with credit cards etc • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NesSYWODmM • Multi Touch manipulation • Cisco Security • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPE_XIpvNaE

  13. Microchipping • Pets can be micro chipped to assist in identifying animals (RFID)(Radio Frequency ID) • Microchip can be inserted under the skin • Can be scanned to retrieve information about the animal (e.g. chip has an ID, scanners picks up ID then queries a system for information on the ID) • What about chipping humans? • Huge ethical debate, Exercise: Find out why • Privacy, Big Brother, Religious, Conspiracy Theories • RFID Clothing

  14. Cellphone Tracking • Cell phone tracking services • http://www.google.com/latitude/intro.html • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-Oq-9enE-k • Supported Phones: • Android-powered devices with Maps v3.0 and above. • Most colorBlackBerry devices • Most Windows Mobile 5.0 and above devices. • Most Symbian S60 devices • iPhone and iPod touch devices • Works by triangulating cell phone location off nearby cell phone towers.

  15. Cellphone Tracking • Triangulation

  16. Review • Can you: • Describe communication advantages and disadvantages of virtual worlds? • Identify and describe three different simulations and explain why they are used? • Explain the potential benefits of voice recognition system to end users? • Define ubiquitous computing? • Describe business possibilities of touch screen wireless technology? • Explain the ethical debate surrounding microchipping • Describe the differences between microchipping and cell phone tracking?
