What do they do? • Probation officers oversee offenders sentenced to probation and parolees. • Sometimes offenders are given probation instead of jail time or additional jail time. • Probation officers strive to restore their clients. Parole officers meet with their clients on a regular basis to evaluate their progress and check their activities. • Probation officers help their clients rehabilitate by offering them counseling and helping them acquire education, housing, and a job.

What are the job requirements? • You have to pass written and oral test, psychological profile, physical examination, and have a valid drivers license. • The minimum degree is a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice or a related field. • All probation officers need to be good communicators, be able to produce detailed reports (write well), and have technical skills. • If you have a felony criminal background you are not eligible.
