Understanding Correlation and Determination Using ClassPad: A Practical Guide

In this exercise, learn how to calculate the correlation coefficient (r) and the coefficient of determination using your ClassPad. Follow the detailed ClassPad instructions to input your data for independent and dependent variables and obtain the r value. Understanding correlation in real-world contexts, such as the relationship between a basketball player's height and slam dunks, illustrates the importance of recognizing correlation versus causation. Complete the assigned classwork/homework to reinforce the concepts discussed.

  1. EXERCISE 2G Calculating r and the coefficient of determination

  2. DON’T BE ALARMED!! • USE YOUR CLASSPAD AND YOU’LL DO FINE!!! • CLASSPAD INSTRUCTIONS: • CALC • LINEAR REG • XLIST: MAIN\INDEPENDENT VARIABLE • YLIST: MAIN\DEPENDENT VARIABLE • TAP ON ‘OK’ • READ THE R VALUE CORRECT TO TWO DECIMAL PLACES.

  3. Grab it from your calculator and multiply by 100

  4. Correlation and causation • Say we saw r = 0.91 for height and the number of slam dunks in a basketball team. • This is a strong association between the height of basketballer and the number of slam dunks he makes, however we cannot assert that the height causes him to make a lot of slam dunks. • Factors: skill level, accuracy, abilities of opposing team etc.

  5. EXAMPLE (taken from Q9 pg 96)

  6. CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK • Complete Exercise 2G pg 94 Q’s 1-8
