  1. Welcome to Thursday! • Please direct your browser to the Voise website. • Follow the link to Quia: Cause/Effect – 3 • Secret word: today

  2. Welcome to Thursday! • In place of your bellringer today, I would like you to revise your thesis statements. • I have made comments to your homework; look at those and make appropriate changes. Also, write down whether you agree or disagree with my comments and why that is the case. • 3 minutes should be enough time for this!

  3. Some issues • “It was unsuccessful…” • My question as a reader: Who or what are you talking about? • Ensure that your generalizations back up your thesis: • “While organized labor did not effectively improve the lives of workers, many workers gained shorter work days and increased wages through strikes and non-violent boycotts. • ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!

  4. Thesis Formula Generalization 1, Generalization 2, and Generalization 3,answer the big question.

  5. The Big Question… • How successful was organized labor in improving the position of workers in the period from 1875 to 1900 ? Analyze the factors that contributed to the level of success achieved.

  6. Your Thesis • To a certain extent, organized labor was successful in improving the position of workers in the last quarter of the 19th century; however, there were several obstacles including public opinion, employer opposition, and government intervention.

  7. The Big Question… • Choose TWO of the following organizations and explain their strategies for advancing the interests of workers. To what extent were these organizations successful in achieving their objectives? Confine your answer to the period from 1875 to 1925. • Knights of Labor • American Federation of Labor • Socialist Party of America • Industrial Workers of the World

  9. Your Thesis • From 1875 to 1925, the nation witnessed many labor upheavals due to labor issues and the rise of big unions. While the Knights of Labor were not very successful at improving the interests of workers due to their idealistic and more radical strategies, the American Federation of Labor was more successful because of their peaceful and pragmatic stance.

  10. Writing an Introduction • Opening statement • Don’t state topic specifically • “The American Military has always been a major piece of US culture. • Introduce topic • “One of the most well-known groups of U.S. soldiers is the Tuskegee airmen.” • Thesis statement • “Their challenges of cultural norms, incredible bravery, and success in battle make the Tuskegee airmen a major piece of U.S. history.”

  11. Tips for writing supporting paragraphs • Each generalization from your thesis should be at least one paragraph in your paper • Generalization 1 • 3-5 supporting facts (more than 5, make a new paragraph) • At least one sentence explaining how the facts used prove your thesis is correct

  12. Outline • I. Introduction • 1. opening statement • 2. transition to topic • 3. thesis • II. Body • 1. Generalization 1 • Supporting fact • Supporting fact • Supporting fact • Significance/Connect to thesis
