  2. Thomas McCall Thomas McCall (1834-1904) was a Scottish cartwright. Born in Penpont he came to Kilmarnock at age 20, where he lived until his death (obituary 1904). He built, in 1869, two versions of a two-wheeled velocipede with levers and rods tossing a crank on the rear wheel (English Mechanic 5/14/1869 and 6/11/1869). This was a reaction to the French velocipedes, of the mid 1860s, with their front-wheel pedal cranks. In fact, this rear-wheel idea occupied seven more inventors in that year (Lessing 1991).

  3. Karl von Drais Karl Drais (April 29, 1785 – December 10, 1851) invented the Laufmaschine ("running machine"). Karl Drais was born in Karlsruhe with the aristocratic title Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Christian Ludwig, FreiherrDrais von Sauerbronn, but as he was a democrat, he did not use his title. His father was the chief judge of Baden, Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig von Drais. His mother was Margarete Ernestine von Kaltenthal. The Margrave of Baden, Carl Friedrich von Baden, was one of Karl's godfathers. From 1803 to 1805, Drais studied architecture, agriculture and physics at theuniversity of heidelberg.

  4. Pierre Michaux Pierre Michaux (Bar le Duc June 25, 1813 - Paris - 1883) was a blacksmith who furnished parts for the carriage trade in Paris during the 1850s and 1860s. He started building bicycles with pedals in the early 1860s. He, or his son Ernest, may have been the inventor of this machine, by adapting cranks and pedals on the front wheel of a draisine. In 1868 he formed a partnership with the Olivier brothers under his own name, Michaux et Cie ("Michaux and company"), which was the first company to construct bicycles with pedals on a large scale, a machine which was called a velocipede at the time, or "Michauline”.
