  1. Run-On Sentences

  2. Read this… what did this writer do wrong? Last night I made dinner and I made tacos with ground beef, tortilla shells, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes and they were so good they make my stomach growl every time I think about them because they were just the right mix of spicy and garlicky which is my favorite flavor in the world so I want to make them again soon so I can eat up!

  3. What are Run-On Sentences • A run-on sentence is actually two or more sentences run together without proper punctuation as if they were one sentence. • Run-on sentences make it difficult to follow the ideas presented in the sentences.

  4. When do Run-on Sentences Occur? • They often occur when you leave out an end punctuation. • Example: • In 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth he made his second space flight on the space shuttle Discovery in 1998, when he was 77 years old. • To correct this, you would need to add end punctuation to separate the two complete sentences. Where should it go?

  5. They can also occur when you use a comma to separate two complete sentences. • Example: • Sally Ride was the first American woman in space, she was a member of the shuttle crew. • To correct this sentence, you would need to replace the comma with an end punctuation. Or, you could make it a compound sentence by adding a conjunction after the comma. How would you rewrite the sentence?

  6. Run-On or not? If the sentence is a run-on, then rewrite it so that it is not a run-on. If the sentence is not a run-on, then write correct beside it. • People constantly search for faster ways to communicate, the Internet is one tool that helps people share information quickly. • The Internet has changed a great deal since it was invented now it can be used by almost anyone who uses a computer. • The earliest form of the Internet was designed over thirty years ago, and it was created to be used by the military.
