The Issue • Libya’s citizens have a small number of rights • "Citizens did not have the right to change their government " (US Department of State). • "The government instituted new restrictions on media freedom and continued to restrict freedom of speech (including Internet and academic freedom) " (US Department of State). • Affects everyone in Libya • "Well over 100 military, police and judicial officials have been assassinated since the Libyan revolution " (Frykberg).

  3. The Issue • Lack of rights caused many of the citizens to rebel against the government

The Issue • Revolts from the citizens caused brute force to be used • Would torture people who were sent to jail or for other reasons • "The law prohibits such practices, but security personnel reportedly routinely tortured and abused detainees and prisoners during interrogations or as punishment " (US Department of State).

  5. The Incident • FarrahHamarywas tortured when his friend had a car accident in July • When he went to help he was arrested and tortured over two days • "'I was hung upside down and beaten with a chair and an iron bar, first on the soles of my feet and then on my back and arms until I was bleeding, cigarette butts were extinguished on my arms. My hand was broken during the beating and it still hasn't healed properly '" (US Department of State).

  6. The Incident • Forced to pay LD 500 ($386) every 10 days or he would be arrested again • Also tried to hire a lawyer, but when he went to the leader of the militia and was told to leave • Had Haramay’s passport taken away too
