Paper 2(Language Use & Comprehension) • Graphic Stimulus (5marks) • Grammar (7 marks) • Punctuation (3 marks) • Vocabulary (5 marks) • Vocabulary Cloze (5 marks) • Comprehension MCQ (5 marks) • Editing (10 marks) • Grammar Cloze (10 marks) • Cloze (15 marks) • Synthesis & Transformation (10 marks) • Comprehension – Open-ended questions (20 marks)

  6. Paper 3 (Listening) • 6 text types to be familiar with – instruction, exposition, explanation, narrative, recount, information • Examples of texts - announcements, news broadcast, dialogues, advertisements, recipes, • 7 texts will be read twice • 20 Multiple-choice questions • Some questions may involve some form of visual matching

  7. Paper 4 (Oral) • Reading Aloud • Picture Discussion • Conversation -Topic given will be related to the picture - Candidates are to engage in a meaningful conversation with the examiners (usually a panel of two teachers)

Paper 1: Situational Writing • Content : • Inclusion of essential information present in the stimulus/task description • Language and Organisation: • Minimal language errors (i.e. spelling, punctuation, tenses,etc.) • Well-linked ideas and facts such that information presented is very clear • Good understanding and clear awareness of purpose, audience and context

Paper 2: Continuous Writing • Content : • Fully relevant ideas • Ample ideas • Sufficient development of ideas • Language and Organisation: • Minimal language errors (i.e. spelling, punctuation, tenses,etc.) • Wide and appropriate use of vocabulary • Good sequencing, paragraphing and linking of ideas and facts

  10. Paper 2: Comprehension • Being able to use reading strategies to make sense of a text: • Questioning Technique (5Ws, 1H) • Accessing prior knowledge • Using contextual clues • Understanding the requirements of the questions that follow

Paper 2: Comprehension • Answering the questions by including only relevant information and ensuring the answers contain no language errors • exclude irrelevant information • answering in complete sentences • checking to ensure there are no spelling, punctuation and tense errors in the answer

  12. Paper 2: Cloze Passages • Being able to use reading strategies to make sense of a text • Having a wide range of vocabulary to understand possible words that could fit in the blanks • Understanding how words are used in different contexts and selecting the correct word.

  13. Synthesis & Transformation • Understand how to combine two sentences and/or transform a sentence from one form to another while ensuring that: • meaning is preserved • the sentence is grammatically correct • the sentence contains no structural errors

  14. Teaching Focus Reinforcement of language items learnt through revision + re-teaching if necessary Bridging skill gaps Sufficient exposure to PSLE-type items

  15. Materials and Resources • A good collection of worksheets prepared plus practice papers consisting of ACSP past year papers and papers from other schools • Constant review and improvement of worksheets to ensure relevance • PSLE Booklet for revision

  16. Support Programme • Philosophy of providing for all through supplementary/remedial lessons • Supplementary Lessons – extension of classroom lessons. All pupils should attend these classes.

  17. Parents’ Support • Remind your son to: • be attentive in class • complete practice papers with due diligence • Help them balance time spent completing tuition homework and schoolwork

  18. Parents’ Support • Listening: • News broadcast/ snippets of a conversation/ radio jingle • ask them a few questions in relation to what they heard • Writing: • Focus feedback on one area at a time (e.g. idea development, vocabulary or minimizing errors)

  19. Parents’ Support • Oral: • Reading • check their diction/ voice projection • prompt them to be expressive • Picture discussion • refer to pictures and discuss content • ensure that your son speaks in grammatically sound sentences • ensure that he uses good vocabulary to express himself

Parents’ Support • Reading widely to ensure exposure to story ideas and vocabulary from different sources: • continue to read the newspaper, books (fiction/non-fiction - different genres), magazines and other appropriate materials to maintain exposure to different text types/ genres • Revision: • revise practice papers • Items taught in class
