  1. Bacteriaand Protists Academic Standard 7-2.3Compare the body shapes of bacteria (spiral, coccus, and bacillus) and the body structures that protists (euglena, paramecium, amoeba) use for food gathering and locomotion. Ms. Dunn Forestbrook Middle

  2. What do I need to know? Be able to classify bacteria by their shape and protists (euglena, paramecium, amoeba) by the way they move and gather food. Bacteria are in the kingdom….. MONERA!!!!

  3. Bacteria are: • One-celled organisms. • Categorized by their shape!!!!! • There are 3 basic bacterial shapes in the Kingdom Monera

  4. Round – referred to as cocci 2. Rod Shaped- known as bacilli 3. Spiral – corkscrew shaped; known as spirilla

  5. What do they look like and where do they live? bacteria Simplest organisms.asx (3 min. 39 sec.) How do we know they exist? We tapped their phone lines!!! science and bacteria (scientists).asx Okay, so we might need them for oil! Why don’t we destroy them? Intro to Bacteria.asx

  6. Protists • Protists are organisms that are classified into the kingdom Protista. • There is a lot of variety within the protists, they do share some common characteristics. • All protists: • Have a nucleus with a nuclear membrane • Are usually one-celled • Live in moist environments

  7. Protists are grouped by the way they move and obtain food. • Examples: Euglena, Paramecium & Amoeba • Euglena- • Have a flagella • Move by pulling themselves with their flagella • characteristics of both plant and animal; contains chloroplasts that photosynthesize and can consume other organisms. euglena 43 sec.asx

  8. 2. Protists with Cilia (ex. Paramecium) • Move by beating (flapping) tiny hair-like structures called cilia • Cilia act as tiny oars that allow the protist to move through its watery environment. • Cilia also beat and help to capture food

  9. 3. Protists with Pseudopods (ex. amoeba) • Move by extending part of their bodies forward and then pulling the rest of their bodies forward • Pseudopods- (false feet) finger-like structures that they project forward • also used to trap food

  10. Observe how they move… • The Protist (7 min.clip) • video clips\The Protists 7 min.asx • Movement of Protazoa • movement of protazoa 1 min 31.asx http://edcommunity.apple.com/ali/story.php?itemID=228
