  3. What have you grumbled about? grumbled • A person who grumbled about something complained about it in a low voice. • The neighbors grumbled about the noisy street repairs.

  4. How were ancient traders like modern business people? traders • Traders are people who buy and sell things or exchange one thing for another. • Ancient traders carried spices across Asia.

  5. Why do you think blossomed can be used for both meanings? blossomed • A person or business that grows and develops has blossomed. • We say that a tree has blossomed when its flowers appear in the spring.

  6. What is the difference between wailed and sobbed? wailed • Wailed means “cried out with a long high sound.” • The baby wailed and could not be comforted.

  7. What comes to mind when you think of a lonesome place? lonesome • A lonesome place is a long way from where people live. • Very few people visit that lonesome place.
