  12. 2012 US Firefighter Fatalities In 2012, the number of on-duty firefighter deaths fell for the 4th consecutive year, with declines in the following areas: • Lowest number of volunteer firefighter deaths ever • Second-lowest number of career firefighter deaths ever • Lowest number of sudden cardiac deaths • Second-lowest number of deaths during training activities • Lowest ever deaths at structure fires • Number of road vehicle crash fatalities up from 2011 (but still lower than average)

  13. 2012 Firefighting FatalitiesWho is dying? • Career firefighters (defined as those who are employed full-time as firefighters) suffered 23 deaths in 2011. • Volunteer and part-time paid firefighters accounted for 30 deaths. • 11 additional deaths (2 inmates, 5 federal contract-ors or agents, 4 military) were reported by NFPA. • The median age of firefighters who died on duty was 49; the oldest was 79 and the youngest was 17 years old.

  14. 2012 Firefighter FatalitiesWhy are we dying?Stress and overexertion are still the leading killers • The largest single medical cause (52%) of firefighter deaths in 2012 was sudden cardiac vascular or cardiac events. • Heart attacks caused the deaths of 25 on-duty firefighters. More than half of those afflicted were career firefighters.

  16. 2012 Firefighter FatalitiesWhere are we dying? Because residential fires are most common, the highest incidence of firefighter fire ground deaths in structures was in residential occupancies. HOWEVER, fires in nonresidential structures, such as mercantile, public assembly and manufacturing prop-erties, are more hazardous to firefighters, on average. (There are fewer of them, but they are deadlier.)

  19. 2012 NY State Line-of-duty deaths • Lt. Richard A. Nappi, 47, FDNY, died 4/16/12 after an apparent heart attack while battling a three-alarm fire in Bushwick, Brooklyn. • Ronald Keddie, 64, Sheridan, collapsed at the firehouse 6/27/12 while preparing to go on an MVA call. • Antonio Rodriques, 49, Yonkers, died 7/31/12 from complications related to a hemorrhagic stroke he suffered during fire department training. • Asst. Chief Timothy J. Lamere, 47, Constable, suffered a heart attack at home 8/21/12 following department training. • Mike Chiapperini, 43, West Webster, 12/24/12* • Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, West Webster, 12/24/12* * Firefighter Chiapperini and Firefighter Kaczowka were shot and killed at the scene of a house fire that had been intentionally set in order to draw the firefighters into an ambush.

  29. 2011 NYS Ambulance AccidentsAccidents unchanged, injuries up 81%(source: NYS DMV) • There were a total of 473 accidents. • There were 3 fatalities: 1 amb. passenger, 1 non-amb. driver, and 1 pedestrian • 477 persons were injured, up from 263 (Includes EMS responders, patients, those in other vehicles, pedestrians, etc.)
