  1. Louise Pearce: Temperature Survey of Env Identifying Hot and Cold Spots + Thermal Comfort Study

  2. Overview • Aim: to identify hot and cold areas in Environmental school at UEA. • 2 Parts to the project: temperature monitoring using Pico recorder & thermal comfort study. • Thermal comfort study will be most comprehensive carried out so far in Env building.

  3. Taking Temperature Measurements • Is the South side of the building warmer? • 8 Probes on each side • Summer and Autumn readings taken • Thermal comfort study agrees/or not? • Selectively double glaze cold areas: CBA

  4. Difficulties That Arose • Building work in Env: Walls removed, heating changed, people moved. • This means inconsistency between summer and Autumn readings. • Winter readings now to be taken. • Delayed again due to faulty recorder. • Thermal comfort study extended.

  5. This is the main area where the thermal comfort study was carried out.

  6. This is where the temperature monitoring was carried out. • Some of the thermal comfort subjects also based in this area.

  7. Results of Temp Survey Largest fluctuations external. S nearly always warmer. Internally,N warmer. Coldest room 0.53. Similar pattern. Internal temperatures as low as 12 degrees. N also warmer internally.

  8. Thermal Comfort Study

  9. Thermal Comfort Study

  10. Summary • Considerable discomfort exists. (Too warm mainly). • Energy wasted as windows kept open to stay cool in November. • Usefulness of temperature data limited due to building work and heating being fixed between samples.

  11. Further Work to Be Done • Further analysis of existing data, and of new winter data available next week. • If the study was improved and done again by somebody else: Clo values all assigned by 1 person to avoid bias. Metabolic rates all assigned by 1 person. • Choose an area of Env not under development.
