Works with Microsoft Office (Mac OS X or Windows), Open Office, LibreOffice, and NeoOffice Zotero sounds awesome! How do I get started? • Visit the Zotero website @ http://www.zotero.org • Click on Register to create a Zotero account (it’s F-R-E-E!) • When returning click on Log In • Download the latest version of the Mozilla Firefox web browser (version 3 or later) • From the Zotero home page click the red download button • Mozilla Firefox web browser: • Click Zotero for Firefox link to download the add-on • Restart Firefox • Zotero will show up in the lower right hand corner of the Firefox web browser • Other web browsers (Google Chrome, Safari): • Underneath Beta Releases click on Zotero 3.0 Beta • Download the Zotero Standalone application for your operating system (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux) • Download the Zotero Standalone Connectors for Google Chrome or Safari • Download Word Processor Plugins: • Windows users: Click on Word for Windows Plugin for Zotero 2.1 • Mac OS X users: Install PythonExt and Word for Mac Plugin for Zotero 2.1 (be sure to install the PythonExt so the Word Plugin will work) • Sync your Zotero account: • Open your Zotero library through the Firefox add-on or the Standalone application • Click on the gear icon • From the drop-down list select Preferences… • In the dialog box click on the Sync icon • Enter ZoteroUsername and Password and click OK • In the Zotero add-on in Firefox click on the sync icon • Accessing Zotero library from a public computer: • Follow the same directions under Sync your Zotero account • Before clicking the OK button click the Reset button at the top • Under Zotero Sync Server select Restore from Zotero Server • Click Reset button below • Be patient – if you have a large library of items in Zotero it may take some time to load • Log out by changing the username and password in Sync preferences, select Restore from Zotero Server, and restart Last revised November 2011
Now you’re ready to build your Zotero library! • Folder with Plus Icon: Organize items into folders and keep track of resources • People with Plus Icon: Create a group library to share resources or work on a big team project • Begin grabbing items to include in your Zotero library • Magic Wand Icon: Journal articles can be added by DOI or right from a research database • Plus or Magic Wand Icon: Books (add by ISBN) • Page with Plus Icon: Websites (will have to be hand entered) • Golden Rule: Garbage In = Garbage Out • Always do a once over and make sure all information transferred correctly • When working with websites pay attention to title, author, year and other reference information • Highlight and take notes on web pages • Paper Clip Icon: Select Attach Snapshot of Current Page • Double click on the web page item in Zotero library • Annotation tools are located in upper left hand corner of browser window • Talk Bubble Icon: Position anywhere on the page and keep notes • Pencil Icon: Highlight any text on the page Access Zotero anywhere! Log into Zotero from any computer anywhere and access your library of items Add, edit and delete items, add and remove collections Download PDFs stored with items in the Zotero library How do I use the Word Processor Plugins? • The Word Processor Plugins can be accessed in the tool bar area • Microsoft Word Users: Click on the Add-Ins to access the Zotero tools • Mac OS X users: Click on the script icon in the tool bar area • Start using the Word Processor Plugins to cite as you go • Insert a citation (in-text citation) into your word document from your Zotero library • Edit a citation to include page number, suppress author, or add multiple authors • Generate a bibliography (Works Cited or References page) based on the in-text citations included in your document • If something doesn’t look right in your bibliography, use this icon to edit the text in a text editor • If you make changes to styles or formatting be sure to click this button to update your changes throughout the document • You can change your citation style (APA or MLA) at any point throughout the paper writing process • Use this if you want to remove the scripting code that generates the in-text citations and the bibliography Need help with Zotero?
