  1. Humid Subtropical Fripp Island, South Carolina Emma Romine Period 9 Mr. Ogle Monday October 29, 2012

  2. Variation in Temperature and Precipitation Temperature • Summer the average temperature is between 70-80 degrees • Coldest month usually averages 45-50 degrees Precipitation • Annual precipitation varies from 254 cm (100 in) around the coastand 63 cm (25 in) inland • Irregular droughts are common= catastrophic to agriculture • Winter rainfall brings large storms • Summer rainfall occurs during thunderstorms and an occasional tropical storm, hurricane • Summers are long and almost tropical, • Temperatures reach freezing only a few times in the winter with rare snowfall, usually three inches or less

  3. Type of Weather in a Humid Subtropical Climate Zone • There are only 2 seasons- Summer and Winter • Hot and humid summers and mild to cool winters • Receives direct sunlight for a large part of the year • High humidity=makes summer temperatures feel even hotter • Experience strong storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes during the Summer months • Temperatures usually stay high (above 70 degrees) throughout the year

  4. Environment & Vegetation • Evergreen trees, bushes, and shrubs • Evergreens are more delicate than hardy evergreen tress(pine & spruce) • Many plants here are evergreens is because of the long months of warmth and regular rain • Broad-leaf evergreens=palm trees and ferns • Many plants and crops can be farmed here since the growing season is 8 months long

  5. Life For The People In These Climate Zones People’s life styles in the Humid Subtropical, Mediterranean, and Humid Continental all differ from each other and are similar to each other. The climate Zones Humid Subtropical and Mediterranean are similar because they both only have two seasons, Summer and Winter. Where Humid Continental has all four seasons; Summer, Winter, Fall, and Spring. The people who lived in a Humid Subtropical and Mediterranean zone would live there life differently than people who live in a Humid Continental from what they wear, what vegetation/crops they grow, what activities they do, and so on.

  6. Other Climate Zones in the United States Humid Continental Mediterranean Temperature Variation: Winter temps= an average of 30-50 degrees Summer= an average of 50-72 degrees Precipitation: no rain falls during the summer most rain fall occurs in winter 20 inches of annual (yearly) rainfall Weather: Summer= mild and dry because of the cold currents from bodies of water Winter= wet and cold 2 seasons= Summer and Winter Vegetation: small shrubs, grasses, and herbs Evergreens-pines, cypress, oaks Fruit trees and vines such as grapes, figs, olives, and citrus fruits Temperature Variation: • Summer= average of 71 degrees • Winter= average of 25 degrees • wide range of temperatures • low cold temperatures and high warm temperatures • Summer can sometimes reach over 100, winter can sometimes drop below zero • 100 degree temperature range Precipitation: • 20 and 50 inches of rainfall yearly • experiences snow Weather: • 4 different season • Warm and humid summer • cool and dry autumn (fall) • cold and harsh winter • warm and wet spring Vegetation: • evergreen forests, deciduous forests, grasses and shrubs, some grasslands, • excellent for farming since it has warm summers and regular rainfall
