  1. Hunters And Other Shooters Always Have Options We are offered choices all the time, no matter the activity we enjoy, the sports discipline we favor, or the type of rifle, handgun or shotgun we prefer to own and use. There are many issues to consider when acquiring the firearm we want to own. Brand names, whether you are looking at, say, Ithaca or another from among the choices that are available will always be an issue. So will be the gauge you prefer, choice of a rifled barrel or not – and of course various other specific issues that will influence your choice. Rifles and shotguns are often, by their very nature, used for different reasons. The rifle is known to be the choice of hunters of game whereas skeet and target shooting – and wingshooting activities for those that prefer hunting birds – are often practiced by the owners of the different shotguns that are available today. The main difference between the shotgun and rifle is the fact that the latter has a rifled barrel meaning that the inside of the barrel is marked with length-wise grooves which cause the projectile to spin when fired – this has the effect that it shoots out of the barrel faster and travels straighter towards the target. Most shotguns do not have rifled barrels because their intended targets are different and you need to adjust for that. However, there are never really any hard and fast rules in terms the things we do and enjoy, such as hunting either bigger game like deer or the feathered varieties that wingshooters love to hunt. The deer hunter is often used to using a firearm with a rifled barrel which one finds with rifles; however, you will indeed find rifled barrels with, for example, the well-supported Deer Slayer shotguns from a company like Ithaca which is known for their great choices of shotguns. Of course they are not the only one; there are others too to choose from. And just like one finds different options in terms of rifled barrels – or not - gauges for these rifles and shotguns may make a difference for the customer that buys them. Bigger game is often hunted with, say, a 12-gauge as opposed to a 20. It is a preference; women and younger persons often prefer the 20 over the 12 simply because it is lighter and easier to handle and it offers less recoil, but many men these days feel the 20 is as good as the 12 that they used to favour as first choice in the past.

  2. When it comes to hunting deer with a good shotgun that fires slugs, the 12-gauge is popular across a wide range with hunters, and these days it is no longer the prerogative of the hunter with the rifle to hunt deer only. A good 12-gauge rifled barrel on a shotgun does the same job with, according to those that use it, the same results. Of course it will always matter as to where you get your gun from, who the designer and manufacturer are, or the suppliers and dealers, or what kind of information you are offered by the salespeople. The really good companies normally have a shop you can visit, they may even show you some of their processes and they will certainly answer your questions about the rifles and shotguns they produce. Among the best of these suppliers and brands now have their own websites with valuable information about the different options they offer, as well as any additional details you may need to decide what you are going to buy. Rifled barrels and rifle barrel shotguns are good for hunting deer and other game – and the 12-gauge over, say, the 20, is often a choice and preference for the hunter. Very often one’s mind is made up when you talk to an expert manufacturer or professional that deals with these issues on a daily basis.
