Hunters and Gatherers Adapt to Their Environment • Early humans were hunter gatherers. • The men hunted animals (large and small)and fished. • The women gathered food – nuts, berries and other fruits and vegetables. • They depended on the natural environment for shelter. • They lived in caves or shelters made of rock, branches and/or animal skins.

  3. Hunters and Gatherers Develop Community • They lived in groups or bands of about thirty. • The size of the band depended on the amount of food available. • The band included several families.

They were people who moved from place to place. • They moved to a new location when food became scarce or limited. • Bands returned to the same places with the changes of season. • Bands migrated or moved from one place to settle in new distant lands while following animals to hunt.
