1. Nationalism. Intense pride in one’s nation. Thinking your nation is better than all others. Wanting your ethnic group to have its own nation. 2. Imperialism. Competition over territory in colonies around the world led to jealousy among Eur nations (esp between Ger, GB,and Fr).

Militarism • Building up military • power (weapons, army etc.) • Using military power to • threaten other nations • Engaging in an arms race • (2 or more nations competing for most weapons) • 1914—Ger and GB were competing to see who had biggest navy • & other great powers were investing in new weapon technology

  4. 4. Industrialism • Nations’ factories created new weapons—wanted to “show them off” • Weapons inc: • --tanks • --submarines • --hand grenades • --rapid fire weapons • --poison (mustard gas) • New technology of IR meant that warfare was more horrific & deadly than ever before

  5. 5. Alliance System (Entangled Alliances) • Alliances are formal treaties—must be honored • Nations agreed to support each other if they went to war • Euro 1914– many nations were“entangled” in alliances (Ger, A-H & It) (GB, Fr and Rus)
