  1. Video Analysis in Physical Education CTAP 295: Teaching with Technology 2000-2001 Natalie Ring Marsh Junior High School Physical Education Department

  2. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade physical education. My web site is: http://ctap295.ctaponline.org/~nring/ I can be reached at: nring@cusd.chico.k12.ca.us I integrated technology into my teaching by having students do a video analysis of their tumbling skills during a three week tumbling unit.

  3. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School What did I expect from CTAP 295? • To learn new ideas for integrating technology with physical education. • To learn how to use Netscape Composer to create a website. • To create an integrated lesson to share with my department and students. • To sharpen my computer skills with the Microsoft Office programs.

  4. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School What have I actually learned? • How to create a website using Netscape Composer. • How to include technology in a activity based, physical education class…without taking away from activity time. • How to create and effectively analyze data in Excel. • The concept of file names and pathways as related to linking web pages together.

  5. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School My Successes: • Students able to actually see improvements in tumbling skills. • Student interest increased with use of video camera. • Students have a raised kinesthetic awareness. • Created focus for students to actually make changes in performance…”my legs were bent last time, now I will try to make them straight.”

  6. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School Shortcomings: • Students needed constant supervision when analyzing performance. • Students lacked skills to evaluate performances objectively. • Lengthy time period between performing, analyzing and performing again. This decreased the value of the feedback the students received from watching their own performances.

  7. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School Student Data and Evaluation: The students were given a skill evaluation form to complete after watching each performance. Using this form the students were able to check off whether or not they did each of part of the skill correctly. Then they rated themselves 1-5 stars and made a statement about how they could improve the skill. They did this for each skill.

  8. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School The following is a portion of the form the students used to evaluate their skills. Students rated themselves 1-5 . • Handstand (overall evaluation): • Circle yes or no for each of the following items: • Started in a lunge, with straight arms above head: Y or N • Did a teeter-totter position into handstand: Y or N • Brought both feet up and together in the air: Y or N • Legs straight in handstand: Y or N • Held Handstand for the count of 2 ‘Mississippi’: Y or N • Finished in a lunged position, straight arms above head: Y or N • How could you improve this skill?________________________

  9. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School Student Data and Evaluation I compiled the student ratings and found the high, average, and low for each skill. .

  10. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School Student Data and Evaluation These graphs show the high, average and low scores for each of the three skills the students evaluated. Performance Two for all three skills is significantly higher than Performance One, indicating that the students rated their second performance higher than their first.

  11. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School Student Data and Evaluation These graphs appear to show that student perform- ance improved from the beginning to the end of the unit. However because the students were rating themselves, the accuracy of the ratings may be questionable.

  12. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School Revisions Things I would change for next time: • Use a video camera with a small LCD screen. I could video tape students and immediately show them the performance. They could then immediately use this feedback to change their performance. • A smaller hand held camera would also make filming quicker and easier for students to do instead of me filming everybody. • I would film (or have the students film) everyday. A different group could use the camera and students could work on one skill and perform, watch the film, correct….and then repeat the process.

  13. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School Summary: Integrating technology into physical education can be a difficult task based on the fact that it is an activity class. By using video I was able to incorporate technology without straying from my subject matter standards. In the future, I could see having students use digital clips from their own skill performances and take them home to create a power point presentation that describes how they have improved over the course of the unit, rather than having them use the standard pencil and paper method that I used this unit.

  14. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School Summary continued: I also have discovered the beginnings of a feedback process that would allow every student to receive personal feedback, even when class sizes are large, and time is limited. I feel that participating in CTAP 295 has helped me to apply many of the skills I learned in CTAP 100. I also now have the basic skills of website design.

  15. Video Analysis in Physical EducationCTAP 295Natalie Ring, Marsh Junior High School The following are digital clips from the videos, and digital photos taken during the tumbling unit. Enjoy!
