  1. Simon The Christ Figure in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies.

  2. Simon feeds the children • Simon reaches up into the trees to give the litt’luns fresh, ripe fruit, and they eat until they are full… this relates to the “Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes”… as related in all four of the gospels. • FIVE LOAVES and TWO FISHES SUFFICE for FIVE THOUSAND PERSONS

  3. Simon speaks to the Lord of the Flies • The Lord of the Flies tells Simon to return to the others and have fun… or else. • “Simon was looking into a vast mouth. There was blackness within, a blackness that spread.” • Simon passes out – perhaps his epilepsy or perhaps stress – • darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice,, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" • Matthew 27:45

  4. Simon is killed by the boys • The Lord of the Flies tells Simon that “They will all do you, see? The Lord of the Flies names the boys who will kill him… • "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.“ • Matthew 17:22

  5. Simon helps to build shelters • Ralph complains to Jack that the only one helping him to build the 3 shelters is Simon. • "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you • Matthew 17:4

  6. The real beast is within us all • Simon says the beast is within humans, and the boys laugh at him. Simon tries to tell the boys about good and evil, but they don’t believe him. For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.' " Mark 7:21

  7. The importance of the conch • The symbol of law and order – and the deliberate rebellion of rules as the boys descend into savagery and uncivil behavior.

  8. Simon gives Ralph faith • While Ralph is in despair looking out to sea from the castle rock, Simon appears quietly and gently says, “You will get home alright.” • He repeats this 3 times to reassure Ralph during this lack of faith. • Matthew:17:19.

  9. Simon knows the beast is human and takes pity on him. • Simon thinks about what he has heard – the wise ones listen carefully – and is certain that “the beast is human – at once heroic and sick” • He finds the parachutist, and while horrified, he takes pity on him and releases the tangled lines. The parachutist is then allowed to go freely upwards with the wind and later land in the sea where he is washed away with the tide.

  10. Simon is killed by the boys ..and they danced… And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split Matthew 17:50
