Ethics of War • Moral and Ethics • Realism vs Pacifism Realism “All is fair” method of international policy Pacifism tends to disagree with realism, finds alternate methods to express discontent. • Just War Theory- middle of spectrum, Jus ad bellum (Justice of Making War), Jus in bello (Justice while in war) • Geneva Conventions of 1949- clear set of international laws for war • Reprisals- Invasion of Afghanistan vs. Iraq War • Prisoners of War on Terror

Law created for maintaining smooth and just actions between states. • Natural Law vs Legal Positivism Natural Law- Universal Law of Nature that applies to all humans Legal Positivism- Most popular today, laws created and agreed upon by states. • Main Sources of International Law ( Treaty and Customary Law) Treaty- formal agreement signed by states Customary Law- “General practice accepted as law” • Commutarian vs. Cosmopolitan Commutarian- assigning a certain moral view to a community not an individual Cosmopolitan- growing popularity today, individual influence on justice is more important then historical influences; individual have moral standing • Humanitarian Intervention and Universal Jurasdiction • Peace Keeping- recognizes a violent conflict and settles it but, does not identify aggressor. • The UN- was alliance created after WWII to bring order on the international stage.

The Iraq and Afghan war • Morals and ethics • The argument over whether we should be in Iraq and Afghanistan is a very prevalent, ongoing debate because of the varying morals and ethics within our nation. • Do we as a nation believe that these current wars are justified? • Realism vs Pacifism vs Just Wars • national interest • Can we afford the path of pacifism • self defense ? • a last resort? • Communitarian Bias • Do we tend to hold certain morals to the states we are fighting? • Does this affect the war? • Peacekeeping • We are employing military force to settle a conflict, but is military force the right choice?
