Mercury • Mercury’s day temperatures can reach over 800 degrees F. • Mercury is a bare and rocky planet with deep craters . • Mercury’s craters were caused when comets and asteroids struck the surface billions of years ago.
Venus • Venus was named for the roman goddess of love and beauty. • Venus can climb to 900 degrees F. • Venus refers to be Earths sister.
Earth • Earth is a ball of rock almost covered by oceans. • Earth is the only planet with plants and animals. • A year on earth is 365 days long.
Mars • Mars is about half the size of Earth. • Mars has tall mountains and deep canyons. • Strong winds blow up big storms of the red dust.
Jupiter • If Jupiter were hollow ,more than 1,000 planets the size of Earth could fit inside it. • Jupiter is a giant ball of gas with a small rocky center. • It is boiling hot at the center of Jupiter.
Saturn • Like Jupiter , Saturn is a giant ball of gas with a rocky center. • It is about 10 times as large as Earth. • Saturn is freezing cold at the to of the clouds.
Uranus • Uranus , too , is a giant gas ball with a rocky center. • A thick haze covers the planet. • Uranus rotates in a different way than the other planets.
Neptune • Neptune is a large blue green ball of gas with a center of rock and iron. • Neptune has high winds and many storms. • Sometimes these storms show up as dark spots.
Pluto • Pluto is the smallest planet. • It is also the coldest spot in the solar system. • A year on Pluto is 247 Earth years long.
