  1. RAVENS

  2. (1Ki 17:2-7) And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there. So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook. And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

  3. (Jas 5:17) Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

  4. The Direction of the Lord

  5. (1Ki 17:2-4) And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

  6. He was a man of compliance

  7. (Pro 3:5) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (Pro 3:6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

  8. He was a man of compliance • He was a man of confinement

  9. (Mar 6:30-32) And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.

  10. Elijah: Cherith before Carmel Joseph: the Pit and Prison before the Place Moses: Desert before deliverance (Isa 45:3) And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

  11. He was a man of compliance • He was a man of confinement • He was a man of concealment

  12. (Deu 32:1-2) Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

  13. The Direction of the Lord • The Dependence on the Lord

  14. (1Ki 17:5-6) So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

  15. He was a man of confidence

  16. (Heb 11:6) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Psa 37:3) Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

  17. (Deu 32:15) But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

  18. He was a man of confidence • He was a man of contentment

  19. (Psa 16:5) The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. (Lam 3:24) The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. (Psa 73:26) My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

  20. (Jer 17:7-9) Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

  21. He was a man of confidence • He was a man of contentment • He was a man of certainty

  23. He was a man of confidence • He was a man of contentment • He was a man of certainty • He was a man of common ability

  24. (1Ki 17:5-6) So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

  25. The Direction of the Lord • The Dependence on the Lord • The Drying up of the blessing

  26. (1Ki 17:7) And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

  27. He was a man subject to Calamity

  28. (Mat 5:45) That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

  29. (1Co 10:13) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
