  2. Literary Devices Mood is the feeling of a story, poem, or other piece of literature. Writers create mood through words, images, and descriptions. Mood can usually be described in one word. Examples: peaceful, dreamy, sad, proud

  3. Generalization Some of the questions on the Reading EOG will ask you to choose the best statement that describes a group of things, passage, or person. This is called making a generalization; you take specific information about something and apply it to all similar things.

  4. Practice: Can you make a general statement? Whenever Nancy has a glass of chocolate milk, her cat Archie wants to share it. He comes running when he hears her open the refrigerator. If she pulls out the chocolate milk, he meows until she pours some for him.

  5. Practice: Can you make a general statement? Squirrels are rodents that use their strong front teeth for breaking nuts. Beavers are rodents that use their front teeth for gnawing wood. Rats and mice are rodents that can use their front teeth for gnawing through plaster walls. Even pet rodents, like hamsters and gerbils, chew on sticks of wood to keep their teeth strong.

  6. Novella Fiction comes in various lengths: • Novella 20-100 pages

  7. Theme Theme is the message about life or human experience that the author is trying to reveal. THEME gives the MEANING of a story. It could also be considered a general statement.

  8. POINT OF VIEW There are three common points of view. 1)Omniscient: the all-knowing point of view. This type of narrator is above the action, looking down on it like a god. An omniscient narrator can also tell the reader everything about all of the characters.

  9. POINT OF VIEW 2) First-person: This point of view occurs when the story is told by one of the characters. The character speaks as “I”. 3) Third-person: In this point of view the narrator zooms in on the thoughts and feelings of just one character in the story.

  10. POV: To summarize…. Omniscient The narrator knows everything and is trustworthy. Third-person The narrator knows only information about one character and is trustworthy. First-person One character is telling the story and they are not trustworthy because it leaves out the opinions/views of others.
