Kansas in Convulsion • Election day fraud-Shawnee Mission • Free soilers est. own gov’t in Topeka • Sack of Lawrence-reaction was swift from an advocate of abolitionism John Brown • Old Brown of Osawatomie- descended upon the settlement of Pottawatomie Creek-May 1856-Kansas Civil War blends into CW • 1857-KS applies for statehood-fearing a loss-pro slave forces in ‘legal’ control came up with the Lecompton Constitution

  4. Buchanan destroys the Democrats • President James Buchanan will replace Pierce in the 56 election-Pa. Born ‘Buck’ Buchanan was also a pliant tool of south • He used his influence to accept the notorious Lecompton Const. • Douglas is livid-this is not true PS as he envisions it-forces the entire Constitution up for vote-Free Soilers flock to polls vote it down • Douglas Democrats-southern democrats hopelessly split-PARTY OVER

  5. Bully Brooks and his Bludgeon • Senator Charles Sumner-Mass. Speech-the Crimes Against Kansas • House member Preston Brooks-S.C. Takes offense- a distant cousin-Senator Andrew Butler was riduculed in the speech • Sumner beaten severely-duel was not requested-social equals duel-Brooks views Sumner as he would a dog • Reactions are varied

  6. “Old Buck v. “The Pathfinder” • Democrats-avoid Pierce-too weak/Douglas too dynamic-both tainted with KSCW- • Chose James Buchanan-wealthy lawyer from Pa.- Kansas-less • Medicore-irresolute-and confused • Republicans chose John C. Fremont over Wm. H. Seward-who wanted to wait-not a republican year • American Party gives a dose of nativism

  7. The Electoral Fruits of ‘56 • Buck won w/less than 50% vote • Fremont and Fillmore siphon votes • Why did Republicans lose? • Why did this loss end up being a positive? • These results are ominous, Why?

  8. The Dred Scott Bombshell • Who was Dred Scott? • Who brings the suit to the courts? • Courts take a simple case and make a political mess out of it • Ruling hinges on the 5th Amendment and due process of law • Property cannot be forfeited w/out consent unless eminent domain is cited

  9. Financial Crash of 1857 • Severity?-not as great economically as ‘37 but emotionally it was devastating • Causes- Cal. Gold/ Crimean war/ overspec./ • Clamor for free farms gets new push- • Tariff question pushed to the forefront- • Republicans gain two sure fire winners as a result- ie-P57 major cause of CW

  10. An Illinois Rail Splitter emerges • Douglas’ senate seat contested • Republicans run AL-humble origins-lawyer • Mary Todd was a ‘step above’-she is ill • Whig ‘log rolling’ politician. One term in US House-’spotty’ record • KS/NEB act ignites flame

  11. The Great Debate • AL-underdog challenges SD to debates • He must to overcome deficit • Debates are a draw until Freeport Ill. • Douglas’ position is sound for Illinois-but dooms him on a national scale • Does Lincoln know this? He accepts defeat with grace-Does he know something we do not?

  12. John Brown:Murderer or Martyr? • Harpers Ferry-arsenal-plan to revolt all slaves in No. Va.-a key componment missed • What happens now is the stuff of legends

  13. The Disruption of the Democrats • 1860 Pres. Election is w/out doubt the most significant in history • Dems-meeting in Charleston SC(that alone should raise a red flag) are hopelessly divided. #1 guy is SD-but the south will not have it and walk out. • Outraged over Freeport Doctrine • Attempts are made to stabilize platform to no avail. Southern Dems walk out

  14. Disruption cont. • Convnetion must disband because a quroum is out of reach. 2/3 not available • Try again in Baltimore-location might help • This time Douglas Dems in control-change nothing-southern Dems walk again. SD wins nomination. • Rival Dems met across town and formed

  15. 2 Third Parties • Southern Dems nominate Buck’s VP-John C. Breckenridge-moderate from Ky. • Platform endorses Dred Scott/extension of slavery in all territories and acquiring Cuba • Constitutional Union Party-John C. Bell

  16. Lincoln Wins • Chicago-Repubs domain-Wigwam • Republican platform-had an appeal to every non southern interest • Free Soilers get../northern manufacturers get../immigrants get../northwest gets../west gets../farmers get../ • Southern exalt in HIS win? • States secede-Compromise stopped
