  5. A tutor • gives individual or small group instruction • guides to help students become independent learners • has content knowledge • listens with empathy, honesty and humour • cares and shares

  6. Responsibilities Be… • on time • respectful and positive • kind and friendly • professional and neutral

  7. Tutor Rights You have the right to • be treated courteously • limit the length of the session • take a 5 minute break, even if a student is waiting • remind students that you cannot do their homework • decline to work with a challenging student, after discussing with the Coordinator

  8. Tutee Responsibilities • attend class • do homework and read assignments • ask questions • come prepared • be open to feedback • be honest about the session • communicate in a respectful and courteous manner

  9. Boundaries in the WC Mistakes are not bad but good. We learn from mistakes. • Boundaries= harm done • Discrimination • Respectfulness • Academic dishonesty • Academic standings

  10. Administrative • Appointments • 30 minutes • Finish on time • Acknowledge students • Answer phone • Help make appointments • Take a drop-in if a student is 10 or more minutes late • All students must register on WCOnline

  12. Down time • Yes! You can • do your own work and read or use the internet • have a quiet conversation with other tutors • But… you also should • develop your practice and reflect • do some of the tutor odd jobs • read tutoring handouts

Policies • If students are waiting, do not exceed 30 minutes. • For grammar help, underline the problems and identify the type of problem (do not fix it for the student). • If a student wants help with a cover letter, resume or application, please let them know that we can give them help one time and refer them to Career Education located on the 1st floor of Old Main. • Students can make no more than three appointments a week; however, they can drop-in and see if we have time if they want more help than the three appointments. • Students are permitted one appointment a day.

Tutoring Process • Check the appointment form on WCOnline • Talk generally to the student. • Try to make the student feel comfortable. • Inquire and ask to see the assignment. • Ask what the student wants you to focus on. • Make a plan together. • Look at the assignment line by line, pointing out the gaps and problems in the paper. • Teach about the gaps and problems. • Give positive reinforcement along with constructive feedback. • Summarize the session and leave the student with something to work towards for next time. • Fill in the client report form on WCOnline. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dGCj-r5QVQ
