Why Now? • Maine Learning Results emphasizes college, career, and citizenship readiness MDOE 2007 • Middle Level Education is a critical bridge connecting elementary and high schools in the PK-20 continuum Bright Futures, MDOE 2009 • Improving 8th grade achievement supersedes high school academic enhancement for college and career success The Forgotten Middle, ACT 2008 • Student achievement improves most when schools implement the full range of middle level practices Fundamentals For Student Success, NMSA 2006
Maine Middle Level Students are: • capable of high academic achievement • experiencing physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth faster than any time except for their first two years of life • most engaged when learning is intellectually stimulating , developmentally appropriate, relevant to their lives, and incorporates current learning technologies.
Charge Of The Commission • Report on the current state of Maine middle level education • Make recommendations to the Maine DOE about needed improvements in educating Maine’s 10 – 15 year olds
Findings Of The Commission • Many Maine middle grades schools have made organizational changes in response to the needs of their students • Fewer Maine middle grades schools have made changes in curriculum, instruction, and assessment • Too many middle level schools have reached a plateau where achievement as measured by the MEAs has stalled. • MLTI has transformed teaching and learning in many Maine middle grades schools.
