  5. Greetings • Cheri and I are pleased to be here, and I am excited about the opportunity to be the President of Indiana State University. • These first few weeks have been wonderful. We have had one warm and welcoming experience after another and are more than convinced that we made a great decision in coming to Terre Haute and ISU.

  24. Achievements of Note Indiana State Alumnus Jill Bolte Taylor, the Singin’ Scientist, named to Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world

  25. Achievements of Note Indiana State University faculty, staff and students helped Wabash Valley residents clean up after the devastating floods this summer. The university community also provided donations of food, money and cleaning supplies. Temporary housing was provided in our residence halls, and the ISU Foundation provided a lead gift and led a fundraising effort to assist members of the ISU community who were impacted.

  26. Achievements of Note The Department of Educational Leadership, Administration and Foundations was named by The Chronicle of Higher Education as one of the top ten programs for faculty scholarly productivity.

  28. Achievements of Note Assistant Professor of Management Aruna Chandra receives Fulbright to study business incubators at the University of Sao Paulo.

  29. Achievements of Note Director Emerita of Athletics Andi Myers receives Torchbearer Award, the highest award given to Hoosier Women, from the Indiana Commission for Women.

  30. Achievements of Note Donaghy Day returns with an emphasis on Community Service. The event for new students was organized by graduate student Crystal Brown.

  31. Achievements of Note Professor of Management Information Systems Jeff Harper was asked to bring e-commerce class to Harvard’s Summer School Economics and Business Program.

  32. Achievements of Note Cpl. Ian Loomis and Officer David Glick became the first ISU public safety officers to receive the W. Kevin Artz Outstanding Police Officer Award for helping save Professor Ted Piechocinski’s life.

  33. Achievements of Note Women’s Tennis Team wins Missouri Valley Conference Championship, and Jennifer Migan becomes the first ISU player to advance to NCAA Individual Championships.

  34. Achievements of Note Associate Professor of Education Diana Quatroche was named to lead Indiana State Reading Association, and the organization moved its headquarters to ISU

  35. Achievements of Note Networks Financial Institute receives an additional $3 million grant from Lilly Endowment for Money Bus and research.

  36. Achievements of Note Graduating Senior Petra Hendrickson receives a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to support her research and the pursuit of a doctoral degree.

  38. Achievements of Note Team Sycamore Racing wins Best Engineered Car and Best Appearing Crew Awards at Summit Racing Equipment Nationals.

  42. Achievements of Note Associate Professor Jim Speer was elected President of Tree-Ring Society, an organization which promotes education and research in the area of dendrochronology.

  43. Achievements of Note Princeton Review recognizes ISU’s MBA program for the second year in a row.

  44. Achievements of Note Professor of Recreation and Sport Management and Physical Education Thomas Sawyer receives 2008 Sport Management Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

  45. Achievements of Note Indiana State University selected to host the 2009 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, the seventh time the university has hosted the event since 2002.

  46. First Impressions • We have some extraordinary people, programs and activities at ISU • Everyone is ready to move forward. • Terre Haute is incredibly supportive of ISU. • Current resources will allow for aggressive action to meet our goals.

  47. Goals of the first few weeks • Participate in as many on-campus events/activities as possible • Meet with primary internal constituents • Begin meetings with external constituents (legislators, donors, community leaders, alumni) • Launch new efforts in strategic areas • Listen, listen, listen

  48. Campus Events • Pleased to be able to attend dozens of campus events, including: • New student orientation, move-in, other student welcome events • Receptions for new faculty, new student scholars, etc. • Welcome events for our Colleges • Meetings with campus governance units, student organizations , Deans & others • Various athletic events

  49. Community Meetings • Also pleased to be able to meet with other important constituents, including • Local legislators and city and county officials • Officials from the Commission for Higher Education, the Governor’s office, State Budget Agency, General Assembly and Congress • Local school officials • Local service organizations • Cheri and I will be doing a tour of Indiana to meet with alumni , legislators and others throughout the state

Important Issues Diversity • Affirmative Action and Diversity separated into two areas, internal search for Affirmative Action Director underway, national search for Chief Diversity Officer to be launched shortly. Both areas to report to the President’s Office. • Diversity must be considered in the broadest context which includes ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, etc. • Increasing the diversity of faculty, staff and students and building awareness of and appreciation for diversity is a critical part of our future and is essential to our role in preparing students for an increasingly diverse world.
