  6. Overview Special Requirements Project LLP Mix Designs Construction Successes

  7. Special Requirements • This project includes special testing requirements for the mix design of HMA • See section 10-1.41, "Hot Mix Asphalt (Long Life)" of the Special Provisions for the special testing requirements. • This testing will take significantly longer than the testing specified in Section 39-1.03, "Hot Mix Asphalt Mix Design Requirements," of the Standard Specifications.

  8. Special Requirements • 10-1.41, "Hot Mix Asphalt (Long Life)“ • Prepaving conference shall be held no more that 30 days following approval of the contract. • Review special provisions for those required to attend. • If a party cannot attend this mandatory meeting at the time scheduled, the meeting will be delayed until such time as all parties can be present, or the meeting will be repeated with all parties present.

  9. Solano Project 04-4A0104 • Specification Section 10-1.41 “Hot Mix Asphalt (Long Life)” Required Mix Designs • HMA (15% Max RAP, Long Life) PG 64-28PM • HMA (25% RAP, Long Life) PG 64-10 • You may request in writing to the Engineer to use a “softer” PG binder to meet the Performance requirements • *HMA mixes must meet permanent deformation, fatigue, stiffness, and Hamburg wheel tracking test requirements. *HMA aggregates must be treated with Lime (Marination)

  10. LLP Structural SectionSolano Project (Main line) 0.1’ HMA –O  0.2’ HMA (15% Max. RAP Long Life) (PG 64-28PM) 0.25’ HMA (25% RAP Long Life) (PG 64-10)  GPI* HMA (leveling course) (PG 64-10) Existing Cracked & Seated PCC or HMA 2 LLP Mix Designs!!! * GeoSynthetic Pavement Interlayer / Fabric NTS

  13. LLP Mix Design Process • Make every effort to insure that consistent and uniform virgin aggregates are available for use on entire project. • Collect sufficient aggregates, virgin and RAP, during mix design process for mix design testing. • Allow a minimum of 3 weeks for each HMA preliminary mix design. • Allow a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks per mix design for performance testing.

  14. HMA Performance Testing • Performance tests required for this project are very different from the usual HMA tests. Few labs in the nation can perform these tests.

  15. HMA Performance Testing • Three labs listed in the Special Provisions can perform HMA performance tests for this project: • University of California Pavement Research Center (UC-PRC), Richmond, CA • Advanced Asphalt Technologies (AAT), Sterling, VA • The Asphalt Institute, Lexington, KY

  16. Construction of LLP HMA • Binder content range during production Job Mix Formula Target Value ±0.3%. • Compaction of LLP HMA during production to 94% - 97% of Maximum Theoretical Density (Gmm). • Consistency, Consistency, Consistency

  17. Successes on Previous LLP • Sufficient Number of Quality Control Staff • Timely test data are essential. • Qualified personnel that understand field operations and can quickly interpret laboratory test data.

  18. Successes on Previous LLP • Staging and Contingency Plans • Establishing a good working platform on which to pave.

  19. Successes on Previous LLP • Effective Communication • These projects are a true Partnership between the Contractor and Caltrans.
