  7. Multiplication continued • Long Multiplication…it is traditional – BUT as long as the children understand WHY they are putting the zeros in – its okay!! 345 The way we were taught? x 45

  8. Division / Sharing/ Quotients • Children consider division as sharing and division as grouping. • The written method used for division is based on the ‘grouping’ method of division and is known as ‘chunking’.

  9. Division continued • Short division and long division is a traditional method and one still used…as long as the children understand WHY!

How to help your child • Addition and Subtraction: • Pairs of numbers with a total of 10, 20 and then every number up to 20 • Saying the subtraction fact to go with an addition fact, e.g. 16 + 4 = 20, so 20 – 4 = 6 • Saying what goes with a number to make the next multiple of ten, or 100, e.g. 75 + □ = 80, 75 + □ = 100 • Using place value to add and subtract, e.g. 20 + 6, 100 + 23, 103 + 20, 26 – 6, 123 - 23 • Use number facts to add and subtract, e.g. 4 + 3 = 7, so 24 + 3 = 27, 84 + 3 = 87, 104 + 3 = 107, 7 – 4 = 3, so 37 – 4 = 33, 127 – 4 = 123 • Adding and subtracting two-digit numbers mentally, asking children to describe how they did this

  11. How to help your child • Multiplication and Division: • Times tables, including the division facts to go with each, e.g. seven 4s are 28, so how many 4s are in 28? It’s helpful to learn the 2s, 5s and 10s, then 3s and 4s, ten 9s (your child might have learnt a track for saying these!) and finally the 6s, 7s and 8s which are the most difficult • Multiplying and dividing by 10, e.g. 24 × 10, 240 ÷ 10, explaining that the digits shift left and right • Working out times tables for multiples of 10, e.g. saying the 3 times table, and then the 30 times table (explaining that every answer is ten times as big) • Doubling and halving two-digit numbers
