Consciousness: The Basics • Consciousness: To be aware of the thoughts you have • Unconscious: To be unaware of the thoughts you have • Three States of Consciousness: • Sensory Awareness: Being Conscious of the world around you through your senses • Inner Awareness: Being Conscious about internal feelings • Self Awareness: Being Conscious of who you are as an individual and how you are separate from others

  10. Three Levels of Consciousness • Preconscious Level: Things that you are not currently aware of but you could recall them if you had to • Unconscious Level: Information that is hidden from your awareness • Nonconscious Level: Things that you do Automatically without having to be aware of them

Sigmund Freud: The Unconscious Level • First Theorist on the Unconscious Mind • Psyche: Human Thoughts • According to Freud, Human Psyche is divided into three categories • Id: Primitive, Instinctive, Impulsive Characteristics • Ego: Mediator between ID and Reality- works by Reason • Superego: Uses the morals and Values of Society to make decisions

Sleeping Disorders • Night Terrors: More Severe than Nightmares in which the sleeper is usually unaware of what they did the night before • Sleep Apnea: Breathing Interruptions that Occur during Sleep • Narcolepsy: Disorder in which people go into Rem Sleep at Random Times • Insomnia: Inability to Sleep • Sleepwalking

If you don’t, how does this Impact you on a daily basis? • Are Sleeping Disorders serious or are they not a big deal? Why do you think this? Which of the sleeping disorders do you think is the most serious and concerning?

  26. Freud and Dreams • Freud claimed that Dreams have enormous importance in people’s lives and can tell people about unconscious desires that they might have • Do you agree with this? He went to his piano and wrote the song in 30 minutes. Do you think that Sting would have agreed with Freud about the Importance of dreams???

Homework Sharing • Share your recurring Dream with a Friend • Have your Friend Analyze and Intrepret the Meaning of your Recurring Dream • Come together with another Partnership and form a group of 4 • Draw your dreams on a poster • For each Dream, write a brief (1-2 sentences) explanation of how you interpret your dream • Be prepared to present your Dreams to the Class
