The Helga Attacks: A Day of Conflict in Dublin - April 26, 1916

On April 26, 1916, the British gunboat Helga targeted key locations in Dublin, including Liberty Hall and the General Post Office (GPO). Initially believed to be occupied by rebels, Liberty Hall only housed a caretaker, who fled at the onset of the attack. British troops landed south of the city but faced fierce resistance, resulting in around 200 casualties. Meanwhile, the GPO endured heavy bombardment from British artillery, machine guns, and shelling by the Helga, marking a brutal day during the Easter Rising.
