  1. Environmental News November 18th, 2013

  2. Logging in Mt. Hood National Forest • A grassroots group in Portland, Oregon is sewing the United States Forest Service. Their plan to log the most sensitive and geologically unstable watershed in all of Mt. Hood National Forest does not comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Forest Management Act (NFMA). • Despite active litigation, the Forest Service began to log. • The logging was stopped on November 8th, due to pressure by the more than 400 people that contacted the Forest Service demanding they stop.

  3. UK families throw away 24 meals a month • Report finds Britons are chucking out 4.2m tonnes of food and drink every year that could have been consumed. • In a time when concern over household budgets is constantly in the news and living costs are rising faster than income, why are we still so wasteful?

  4. Fire tornadoes occur when intense heat and turbulent wind conditions combine to form whirling eddies of air. These eddies can tighten into a Tornado-like structure that sucks in burning debris and combustible gases. A fire tornado consists of a core—the part that is actually on fire—and an invisible pocket of rotating air that feeds fresh oxygen to the core. Fire “Tornadoes” Recently Spotted in Australia

  5. One of the World’s Strongest Storms Hits the Phillipines • Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded on earth, hit the central Phillipines on November 8th. • The winds at nearly 200mph left a trail of devastation. • The typhoon is the 24th serious storm to hit the Phillipines this year. • As of November 9th, around 42,000 families have been affected and are staying in 562 evacuation centres.

  6. Ikea to Start Selling Solar Panels • Ikea, best known for flat-packed furniture, is to start selling solar panels - the first attempt by a large retail chain to transform our energy habits. • The thin film cells will of course come flat packed, but are not cheap, costing around 5,700 euros for a typical small house. • The price includes the cost of installation.
