  1. The Scottsboro Boys (Trial) By Linda Ruizvelasco, Michael Smith, and Jonathan Aparicio.

  2. March 24, 1931 Victoria Price (21) & Ruby Bates (17) traveled to Chattanooga looking for work in the mills. Headed back to Huntsville next day (March 25) after finding no job opportunities. That morning they rode a gondola with 7 white boys.

  3. Day of Crime Less than half way through Huntsville (at Stevenson) they were assaulted. 12 Negroes (according to the girls) jumped on, and threw 6 of the 7 white guys off. Victoria and Ruby were raped by six Negroes each.(This was at Paint Rock approx. 38 miles from Stevenson)

  4. Trial Begins (Charges are Made) The Negroes were caught by officials. After interviewing Victoria, the trial was questioned. She was unbothered in alleging the sexual intercourse(It was a matter of a routine since she was known as a prostitute in Huntsville and Chattanooga) Ruby was managed by Victoria, and the remaining guy in the gondola was considered a “stupid” witness

  5. The negroes • Their lawyer wanted all of them to be tried together, but it was denied • The State demanded that they be tried in four different cases • Judge Hawkins followed the trial and the girls were examined by Dr. Bridges and Dr. Lynch.

  6. First Case • The boys tried in this case were Clarence Norris, 19, (left) and Charlie Weems. (right) • They were two of the oldest guys • Case went to the jury Tuesday, April, 5 • In less than two hours the verdict for the death of the guys was reached.

  7. Second Case It happened on Wednesday, April, 6 In this case, only one guy was tried (Hay Wood Paterson, 18) Three hours later, the jury came back with the death penalty

  8. Five of the remaining guys were tried (Olen Montgomery, 17, Andy Wright, 18, Willie Robeson, 17, Ozie Powell, 16, and Eugene Williams, 18. It was later found that Willie had a bad case of venereal disease, which would make it painful to have committed the act that he was accused of. The case went to the jury on Wednesday, April 8 at 4 pm The next morning the judge came to the verdict for death Third Case -

  9. Final Case Roy Wright, 14, which was Andy Wright’s little brother was tried by himself. The authorities had him at their mercy because of his youthfulness. He was sentenced with life imprisonment. He was sent to Birmingham.

  10. Scottsboro Boys Many Americans considered all verdicts unfounded, so they protested. After six years of proposals and appeals, five of the original indictments were dropped The remaining guys were sentenced to life imprisonment, but one of them, Paterson, later escaped from jail
