  3. Grades -There will be a major test or quiz each week in this class. -Projects will be assigned, but you will be given IN CLASS time to complete these however any projects or class work not completed in class will become homework. -All quizzes and tests will be announced in advance; there will be no pop quizzes

  4. Opportunities to Demonstrate Mastery (ODMs) ODMs in Physical Science will be warm-up question quizzes. These will happen every two to three weeks.

  5. Blackboard…sort of. I have a website that I use for all documents in Physical Science. Check it out often for updates. http://www.corbatscience.com

  6. Grade Percentages Tests: 50% Labs and Projects: 25% Additional Assignments: 22% Tutorials: 3% *Tutorials are on Tuesdays and Fridays the FIRST half of lunch in room 200 or any morning in room 200 from 7:30 – 8:00. *You are required to attend THREE tutorials each quarter.

  7. Policies 1. Honesty is a very important part of this class. Be sure that you have read the Green Hope Honor Code found on blackboard or posted in the classroom 2. Please be respectful of yourself, your peers and the teacher. 3. No food, drinks or cell phones are permitted in the classroom 4. You should be IN class when the tardy bell rings ready to work.

  8. Procedures 1. To use the restroom or get a drink from the water fountain – ask permission and take the hall pass. 2. To turn papers in, place them in the bin. 3. Stay in your assigned seat unless you are working at a lab station or have permission. 4. Stay in your seat until the bell rings, do not line up at the door.

  9. Discipline Plan 1st Offense: Warning 2nd Offense: Contact with home 3rd Offense: Teacher Consequence 4th Offense: Discipline Referral to the administration

  10. Make Up Work *In the event that you must miss class it is best to let me know in advance so that we can get your work together. If you are out sick, please email me and I will respond with the day’s activities. *Any worksheets that are missed will be found in the missing assignment folder in the Classroom. *All work must be completed in a timely fashion.

  11. Late Work *You will be given ample time to work on assignments during class and homework is only occasionally assigned. However, any assignments that are turned in late will have a 20 point deduction applied to them. If it is an extended amount of time after it was originally due, there will be a greater number of points deducted.

  12. Lab Safety 1. Only do labs when your instructed to do so and the way you are instructed to. 2. All accidents should be reported to the teacher immediately, even if you think the accident is minor let the teacher know. 3. Know the location and proper use of safety equipment A. Fire extinguisher B. Fire Blanket C. Emergency eyewash/shower D Emergency Exits 4. No food or beverages allowed in the science laboratory. 5. Students should wear safety goggles when chemicals are involved. 6. Horseplay and immature actions will not be tolerated 7. Students are responsible for setting up and dismantling equipment. 8. In case of a fire drill, unplug hot plates, burners, and other electrical devices and follow procedures for exiting the school. 9. Students should know the proper fire drill procedure.

  13. Lab Safety Part 2 10. Students are not permitted in laboratory storage rooms. 11. Upon first entering the science lab, students are not to touch any of the science equipment until instructed to do so. 12. Recognize safety symbols and cautions incorporated in the laboratory. 13. Student apparel should be appropriate for laboratory work. 14. Students should prepare for each laboratory activity by reading all instructions before they begin. Follow all directions implicitly and intelligently. Make note of any deviations announced by your instructor.

  14. Lab Safety Part 3 15. Broken glass should be removed from work area or floor as soon as possible. Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. 16. Student’s are expected to clean up all materials after the lab for the next class. 17. When mixing acid and water always add acid to the water solution, not the other way around. 18. Unused chemical should NEVER be placed back in the original container due to contamination. 19. All chemicals should be treated as if they are dangerous. Students should not taste, touch or smell a chemical without specific direction.

Our senses often play tricks on us. 4. American scientists have made few contributions to science. 5. As a rule men make better scientists than women. 6. Scientists are too busy at their work to have much fun. 7. Scientists have no definite method they can follow when they set out to solve a problem.

  16. 8. After making a discovery scientists must also try to find ways to use it. 9. Tools for taking accurate measurements are essential to the scientists' work. 10. Science has been part of human existence since our earliest ancestors thousands of years ago. 11. A scientist can make a general conclusion after an experiment once. 12. When I graduate I would like to choose a career in a field related to science or technology. 13. Science has played a great part in improving our standard of living. 14. Scientists often make errors & become frustrated because their experiments are not successful.
