  2. Pilgrimage Basics • Pilgrimage: A journey one takes to a sacred place for religious reasons. • The journey was usually long and required physical and mental readiness. • Pilgrims stayed at hospices once they arrived to the shrine. • Before returning, pilgrims received blessings from a bishop, and also had a session of penance. • When returning, pilgrims would wear a badge on their hat which was from the shrine they had visited.

History of Pilgrimages • The first Christian Pilgrims set on pilgrimages to see the Holy Land. • Another reason for seeking the Holy land was to obtain individual spiritual enrichment. • Rome soon followed as another sight for the Pilgrims to visit. • Churches, baptisteries, and tombs in Europe began creating replications of buildings from the time of Jesus (i.e., tomb Jesus rose from, Jesus’s birthplace).

  5. Effect of Pilgrimages on Europe • Pilgrimage seemed to be strong enough to “set the stone for travel of all kinds.” • The Crusades began to be visualized as a pilgrimage. • Literature was also effected by the pilgrimages. • The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer includes stories told by pilgrims during their pilgrimage. • Number of cathedrals built increased.

  6. More Effects of Pilgrimage Cons Pros Pilgrimage led to the manifestation of language, culture, and ideas. Communication increased in time and importance. • Pilgrims sometimes became sick over the journey. • Pilgrimages led to pirates and highwaymen who often times gained from pilgrims.
